Red Romance back The Killers

We’ve followed New York band Red Romance for nearly a year now. Their jangly, retro-filled pop is like a panacea to the overly produced mainstream hits that saturate commercial airwaves. They recently became the first unsigned band to play Madison Square Garden, where they supported The Killers. We spoke to drummer Darren Beckett about their unusual trajectory: ‘The Killers tour was amazing. They have been very supportive. Great guys. Playing at the Garden was the highlight. We all live in New York, so it was a dream come true’. ‘We are trying to survive in New York, which is hard enough in itself. We just have a goal to make the best possible music, to write great songs. We don’t really know what’s happening around us. Of course, we notice more people are showing up at shows. My favorite Red Romance song is the next one! We have a new song called ‘Just One Kiss’. It’s not on the demo. It will be on our E.P, which will be out around spring’.

Hailing from Queens, NY, The Shivers recently released their latest record, More, via Silence Breaks. The New York cult favorites will be guest writing for Lost at Minor all week.

New Banksy artwork angers the Catholic Church

Banksy has struck again, this time offending the Catholic Church with a bold artwork that critiques their stance on ongoing child abuse scandals. Banksy has taken a replica of a bust of an eighteenth century member of the Catholic hierarchy and added multi-coloured tiles to the face — pixelating it — as a comment on what he considers to be the Church’s cover-up. ‘I’m never sure who deserves to be put on a pedestal or crushed under one’, Banksy noted. And who are we to disagree? Read more

Tattoo artist sued by ex-girlfriend for obscene design

Oh boy, this is so bizarre it could only be true. Apparently a Dayton, Ohio, tattoo artist has been slapped with a $100,000 lawsuit by his ex-girlfriend for tattooing an image of, erm, excrement with flies on her back rather than the scene from Narnia that she had requested. The reason? He’d recently found out that she had been cheating on him with one of his buddies. Damn! And here we were thinking this was the hot new look for trailer park trash crowd.

It might appear that Laurent Le Deunff constructed these fleshy, zombie-looking animal sculptures from dirt and deceased beast remains. Fortunately, the French-artist actually made use of Kraft paper, chicken wire, dreadlocks and other varied components. Don’t ask me why, but the series reminds me of elephant dung heels. Read more

We Make Carpets are designers Stijn van der Vleuten and Marcia Nolte and visual artist Bob Waardenburg. They create weird and wonderful carpets from objects that you’d more likely find in a pantry or kid’s bedroom. Comfortable? No. Practical? No. But, really, who give a damn. Read more

How old must Kermit be now? Not to old to collaborate with skater-friendly retailer Supreme and photographer Terry Richardson. Kermit, who usually wears nothing, has been hooked up with some new threads to advertise the brand. It seems Kermit and Terry are the perfect work partners: they’ve even released a video clip documenting the shoot.

A young female once said, ‘if I were into hot bikie guys, I would always hang out at Deus’. Translation: Guys on bikes like to hang out at Deus Ex Machina because they love the quality custom bike and all the quality trimmings. And, seriously, even the most Toyota Corolla driving of women will be entranced by the beauty of the custom work done by this place. Men and women alike fill the humid, tin-roofed showroom, running their fingers from the rough leather seat thing to the glossy front cover thing to the shiny metal handlebar things. Of course, if you really don’t care, or don’t know how to appreciate a thing of beauty, then, surely, you will love the Deus café. Truffle oil drizzled field mushrooms appear on the breakfast menu. If that doesn’t make you bow at the Altar of Deus, then you can go to hell.

In this post-everything mash-up culture, it’s still sometimes disarming to see how a small tweak can completely change the meaning of iconic images. Read more

The coolest band in Indonesia? I think so. White Shoes & The Couples Company describe themselves as a small band that is ‘influenced by Indonesian movie soundtracks from the 70s and inspired by the acoustic spirit of 1930′s classic jazz musicians’. But I like to think of them as carrying the torch for artists like Benny Goodman, Tahiti 80, and The Cardigans, all at the same time.

Listen to their track, Super Reuni.
