Field Music

‘A house is not a home’. So true. It needs that lived in feel to cross the line, something that the perennially touring Sunderland, UK trio Field Music know all about. Says Pop Matters of their sound: ‘Field Music makes this kind of non-flashy indie-pop that tends to be critically well-received but gains traction with a much smaller (if still fiercely loyal) group of listeners than you might expect’. The Kissaway Trail on My Secret Playlist

The Kissaway Trail have a new album entitled Sleep Mountain due for release on April 20, via Bella Union. Sleep Mountain adds in dabs of electronica to the breadth of guitars for a contemporary and vulnerable rock classic. We asked them about the music that inspired the recording. They started with the Joanna Newsom song, Peach, Plum, Pear [listen below]: ‘A really good song from a great debut album, made by one of the best female artists ever’. Flow eco rings

Flow is an eco friendly ring, made by assembling pieces of recycled straws, for those looking for a unique accessory. The ring band is given by using the elbow of a straw, which gives it a flexibility to be adapted to any extent. And combining patterns and colors, varying the number of pieces of drinking straws, you get an infinite variety of rings for any occasion, age, style, look — making the world cleaner and more colorful in the process. Connect the Dots tattoos

In my next life, the one that will be spent in a daze walking lazily up and down the hipster dome of Brooklyn’s Bedford Avenue, high fiving passing musicians, and eating cheap noodles from the local deli, I’ll have one connect the dot tattoo that spells out the name of my band. And another with the name of my ex-girlfriend. Ah, yes. That will be cool, indeed.

The dirt and ephemera Paul Hazelton uses in his work suggests the impermanence of all things. The British artist assembles household dust into ghostly figures as if to reassemble to sloughed-off particles of people and things back into their original forms. Read more

Our celebrity-saturated culture makes many of us irrationally hateful of the faces we see on our TV screens and magazine pages. Good thing there’s Celebrity PunchOut to let off some of that steam.

I’m so excited to have stumbled across the work of Berkeley, California artist Weston Teruya. On first glance, his work feels purely abstract, like black and white grids with dots of colour here and there, undulating across clean backgrounds. On closer inspection, however, perfectly rendered chairs, life savers, netting, plants and various ephemera come to light. I’m always excited when I come across an artist who can so successfully merge the realistic and abstract, and Teruya does it with aplomb. Read more

The nice thing about black metal is that it’s so hard for it to be co-opted. Between its often extreme ideologies and its inherently abrasive sound, it’s hard to imagine anyone trying to sell you a pair of sneakers with it. Even as some bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth have wormed their way into the mainstream, the vast majority of black metal fans and bands out there are happy to stay in the filthy pits of the underground. Creative advertising packaging
