Me, Wii

When Muhammad Ali delivered his famous ‘Me, Wii’ speech to the Harvard graduating class of 1972 (ok, so it was ‘Me, We’, but why spoil a good story), even he couldn’t have foreseen that some thirty-five years later they would be staging a Wii-mbledom tournament in Brooklyn, New York. But that’s exactly what happened a few weekends ago. That’s right. Wii-mbledom. How very, ummm, wii-tty. Having never used the Wii before, I’m largely oblivious to its pull. But those that have swear there’s no turning back. Hell, my brother is even contemplating a professional career: ‘It’s crossed my mind that I could train eight hours a day and go pro’, he said to me the other day. Hmmm. Anyway, there’s a very funny article about the Brooklyn event on the ABC website. May the Wii be with you.

Power Hog Piggy Bank

Now, this is clever. The Power Hog Piggy Bank is a ‘power consumption metering piggy bank designed to sensitize kids to energy cost associated with running electronics devices’. Just plug the little fella’s tail into a power outlet, then with every coin deposit, you get thirty minutes of electricity. Made from Sabic resin, the Power Hog is totally recyclable. Yes, yes, it’s electric. But naturally so.

Cook. Eat. Drink. Live? Yes, yes, yes

I had a delectable time at the Cook. Eat. Drink. Live foodie event in New York a few weeks back, sampling the wares of an eclectic range of goodies, eating way too much chocolate (though, really, how much is way too much?), and drinking enough wine to fill up the belly of a small, albeit plump, hamster. And I came out of the experience, the lip-smackingly, hip-shakingly fun experience, with just one simple conclusion: the world needs more of these events, where the only objective is to stuff your gullet and drink, drink, drink. Next please! [photos by Alison Zavos] Read more

Asleep On The Subway

You know the feeling: your eyes are getting heavy, heavy, your brain is switching off. And the next thing you know, or you don’t know, as the case may be, you’re a drooling, snoring mess on the R train into Manhattan. Oh, what’s that? That’s just me? Nope. It’s not. There’s a whole website devoted to capturing people at their most vulnerable moment, Asleep On The Subway. The indignity, the shame! We like. Read more

Sculptor George W. Hart recently made a geometric piece out of identical, laser-cut wood pieces called Frabjous, taken from Lewis Carroll’s poem, The Jaberwocky. Hart provides a PDF of the template he used to cut the pieces, which you can use to make your own.

Musicians in Jacksonville, Florida, often plop themselves amongst breakfasting families to nurse their hangovers at the Fox Restaurant. The food is a step above normal greasy spoon fare, but is just as cheap, with a full breakfast costing as little as three dollars. They even offer bananas as an alternative to grits or hash browns.

No wave is alive and well, if Brooklyn duo Talk Normal are any indication. Drummer Andrya Ambro keeps things cohesive with surprisingly precise percussion, occasionally banging on such things as an electric guitar and an old iron pipe rigged with contact mics, while guitarist Sarah Register coaxes some unnerving and discordant noises from her axe and array of pedals. The two take turns shouting abstract and absurdist lyrics with voices like hi-tech valkyries from a futurist nightmare.

This odd, atmospheric animation by web artists Aaron Russ Clinger and Miltos Manetas is simple but effective, a finely rendered piece of interactive art. There are some pretty crazy things you can make the floating man do if you play around with this long enough.

The work of Jennybird Alcantara is a trip, to say the least. This stuff is about as surreal is surreal gets. Think dolls, and animals, and plants, and insects, then mix it all up every which way and you’ve got the beautifully twisted paintings of Jennybird Alcantara.
