Created by Brooklyn artist Ryan Waller, the New College Beat is a ‘small circulation, self-published work of minority interest’. The latest issue features the work of Noah Butkus and Steven Harrington among others and ‘was created in response to the art of scrying, a practice used to discover the future and to re-imagine the present’. Australian-based publication Dumbo Feather have let us know that one of their subscribers, ‘a Melbourne-based interior designer called Sally’, has just launched a community project called Loose Threads with the idea to get people from the small community of Willaura together to ‘make a whole lot of things to refurbish a communal space’. To this end she’s having ‘a workshop day on August 18 where professional sewers, embroiderers, knitters and patch-workers will share their skills’. [photo by Kate Bezar]

It must be in the jeans. The offspring of musical hedonists Richard and Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson is one hell of a talented songwriter. Since his debut self-titled album came out in 2000, Thompson has been busy working on collaborative projects (including the ‘I’m Your Man’ tribute to Leonard Cohen) and solo recordings. His latest album, Up Front & Down Low, is a typically skittish and melodic collection of folk tinged melodrama. We spoke to him recently: With the depth of your musical upbringing, was there really any chance you’d end up as an accountant or a bank teller? ‘A bank teller? I could have aimed a bit higher than that! Assistant branch manager surely. I didn’t have a lot of other skills though, no. I wasn’t academically gifted let’s say, but I also wasn’t particularly artistic in other ways either. I can’t draw or paint and I’m a rubbish dancer’. Read more

The complex and tender thoughts that your senses experience when you’re in love {and we mean truly, deeply, gut-wrenchingly in love) are inside the lyrics, visuals and beats of Verde 3, a band from Bogota, Colombia, who move between rock, pop, electro and new wave. Created in 2002 by Champi (Carlos Benavides), Verde 3 is now one of the most exciting bands in this eclectic city, playing venues like the Teatro Colón, an Italian style theatre built in 1885. The band recently performed there, delighting the audience with a playful mix of piano, Moogs and RGB visuals. Check out the web broadcast. Their first single, Viernes por la noche, was released in December 2006, shortly after they opened for Ladytron in Bogota.

The world falls into two categories: those that are familiar with Lela Lee’s Angry Little Girls comic strip and those that are not — yet. Those that are will know all about Kim the Angry Asian and Deborah the Disenchanted Princess and their other friends as they deal with everyday life as modern day girls and cartoon characters. This book features many of the amusing anecdotes often found in Lee’s comic strip, and whilst they may be politically incorrect, to hell with it! It’s very damn funny.

We love the recently launched Other online store. Not just because of its cool selection of royalty-free illustrations (like this one above, available as a free download for all Lost At E Minor readers), ultra cute designer kiddie range, and collection of canvases, cushions, and snap cards, but also because, with its international aesthetic, Other owns that space between sophisticated and fun using funky colours and minimalist designs.

Designed by BlueSky and manufactured in Sydney, the Dosh wallet is made from a unique blend of flexible and semi-flexible polymers to create a product that’s durable and funky. Now there’s a combination! As well as all the usual compartments, the design includes integrated areas for your keys, condoms and security cards. Oh. It’s water resistant too. Nice.

Bill Dunlap says that he’s all about ‘death, sex and booze’. But his artwork is actually more influenced by the rich Appalachian folk art traditions of rural Western Maryland and West Virginia where he grew up. He’s taken part in over 50 art shows and appeared on the covers of numerous magazines and newspapers.

Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Alec Soth is represented by the Gagosian Gallery in New York. His work is full of introspective moments - sullen at times, resilient and optimistic at others. It’s a window into a world where real life collides with the imagined with remarkably elegant precision.

There’s been a bit of a trend of late towards paper art, all started by the successful laser-cut master Tord Boontje. Japanese artist Kako Ueda has also been inspired by the versatility of this medium. Drawing influences from nature, the body and their interaction, the intricate pieces make my fingers throb with the memory of scalpel mishaps. Her work looks freshest with the introduction of watercolor, something that Tord Boontje’s subtle palate doesn’t allow for.

Explosion in the Sky’s Catastrophe and the Cure isn’t just a damn cool name for an instrumental track, in the hands of electro juggernaut Four Tet, it’s also a sublime trip through the twisted corridors of sonic exploration. [see also Cloud Cult]

MAiLmeART was created by Darren Di Lieto, the founder and editor of LCSV4. Submissions can be envelopes or packages which have been drawn on, painted, dipped in acid, covered in paper mache (anything you want really) but they must look amazing and they must have travelled though the post with the postman able to see the work. Now there’s a postie friendly idea.

Have you ever felt engulfed by a strange mix of emotions, ones which make you feel all giddy? Well, that’s what this track — Not For All The Love In the World — does to me. French pop-folk extraordinaire Sebastian Tellier remixes Irish pop band The Thrills. Totally luscious and dreamy, especially the glockenspiel sound. Beautiful stuff.

Many moons ago, when my hair was longer and my eyes were wider, I played guitar in a Sydney rock band. Over a period of several years, the four members in the group went from relative normality to the very personification of imagined rock glory. Read more
