by Where would we be without synths and drum machines? Probably still listening to Grateful Dead jams in the alleyways of Height-Asbury. Done well, the remix is a wonderful thing. Case in point is Royksopp’s rendering of the Kings of Convenience track I Don’t Know What I Can Save You From. And then there’s Riton’s version of the Mystery Jets song, The Boy Who Ran Away. A White Lines for the 21st Century? I think so.

Muscles is doing a remix of my single I Love Pop Music and I’m really excited to hear what he comes up with. He’s a new electronic artist from Australia and he’s full of piss and vinegar. He’s got that youthful Manchester-esque arrogance that makes rock n’ roll sound life-changing, all set to a surprisingly retro style. Check out his album Guns Babes Lemonade. It’s sort of like thug pop techno made for big teddy bears.
Electro-breakbeat label Gulp Communications have just released a stomping Christmas mix called, appropriately enough, It’s a Gulp-ing Xmas ‘08′ [listen below]. Says Andrew Friendly at Gulp: ‘We decided to do a Gulp Christmas mix, to celebrate the bunch of remixes we’ve done. And it’s a stormer! It’s got some big tracks from the past year, plus the upcoming singles for Milke, Black Peter Group, the collaboration with Roxy Wilde, and the rather huge next single for Joe and Will Ask, after their Kitsune twelve in January. Plus, it’s got their remixes of La Roux and Mystery Jets [above], and the Andrew Friendly remixes of We Have Band and The Rivers, all nicely packaged and ready under your Christmas tree’. So ho Ho Ho, and all of that good stuff.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. Project Squadt’s latest skull-masked collectible figure is already sold out, but it’s worth taking a look at their site to be ready when they unveil the next one. I’m not much of a toy-freak, but these are still pretty nifty.
Ok, so maybe it’s the extra-strong Brooklyn coffee I’m drinking or perhaps its that the pine coated goodness of Christmas is well and truly in the air, but I’m kinda excited this morning as my wife has just launched her website, Feature Shoot, which is a resource for photo editors, art directors, industry professionals, and pretty much anyone who appreciates good photography. It’s a great way to discover new photographic talent and the website is already bursting with interviews with up-and-coming American photographers alongside that of established photographers who have completed a project or whose work has taken on a new direction.
This clip had such an impact on me when it first came out, back in the day. There’s just something so poignant about the idea that some people you pass on the street everyday have a little bit more insight into their world — our world — than we could ever imagine. It’s beautiful and confronting, and it’s all set to the most wonderfully evocative music.
I saw a real wizard. His name is Twig Harper. He shoots crazy waveforms from his fingers, aided by magic-infused electronics. I am now a frog. If you see him, tell him I no longer wish to be a frog.
