by We checked in recently with New York based Argentinean illustrator, Fernanda Cohen. How’s the illustration scene in New York at the moment? ‘Over crowded, sometimes repetitive and predictable, but there are always jewels here and there. I believe most of the emerging stars in the illustration field in the past few years came out of New York, mostly SVA graduates’. What colours to you tend to gravitate towards? ‘Aqua Green’. Is there a time of the day you feel most creative? ‘Between 2 am and 6 am’. What’s usually playing on your stereo when you’re illustrating? ‘Languis, Jens Lekman, Belle and Sebastian, The Lovers, and Françoise Hardy’.

Another smokin’ hot New York illustrator
I met Caroline Thaw at Brooklyn’s Third Ward in one of the courses I taught. The first time I saw samples of her work, I was happily overwhelmed by her diversity of styles, her cute yet twisted characters, the radiant and infinite beauty in every piece she made, her delicate line, and her strong sense of style and scenographic space. Part of her work’s charm comes from her experience in theater design designing sets and custumes for productions that traveled around the world (she is from England, originally), and her tremendous love for kids.

Megan Russell’s patterned illos
Maryland’s MICA just seems to be cranking out the talent this year! Recent grad, Megan Russell, creates quite lovely, intricate, densely pattern-based illustrations. With a polished portfolio that runs the gamut from editorial to set design to fashion, she is clearly a versatile illustrator. Be sure to check out her Narrrative-Book section as there are some especially wonderful illustrations composed of multiple vignettes colliding all over the page to create quite lively narrative tapestries. Located in Suffolk, England, this is all-glass house designed by London’s de Rijke Marsh Morgan comes with a twist — the house slides open! That’s right: ‘Four electric motors silently slide the 20 tonne outer house shell back to reveal the inner glass and steel structure. The motors that power this sliding run on car batteries automatically recharged through solar power’. The whole process takes around six minutes to complete and the house was built with the option of ‘extending the track further to allow the roof shell to cover a garden or swimming pool’. Read more
At times floating out of the ether with the familiarity of forgotten Sunday mornings, while at others, pounding out textured, thumping pop, the sound of Chicago band Sonoi might be difficult to describe, but that’s what makes it so interesting. The depth of the band’s sonic palette is evident on their song Sherry Fall [listen below], which starts off as a straight-ahead pop song, punctuated by Busch’s evocative phrasing, but in minutes transforms into a near motorik groove.

Blue Sunshine by Danish electronic duo Syntaks
The hypnotic video for Syntaks’ Blue Sunshine features fleeting glimpses of half-remembered imagery, both heavenly and apocalyptic, and vertiginous shifts in scale superimposed over its creators’ faces. The clip was directed by Syntaks’ own Jakob Skott and stars his musical collaborator and romantic partner, Anna Cecilia. In late 80s and early 90s, the Illustrated Laser Ray and futuristic grids aesthetic was a sensation, years before it began to diminish abruptly. This website hosts a nice collection of quirky, sometimes mind-boggling, sculptures from around the world. There’s a certain Dali-esque feel to a lot of them – those surreal, dreamy hallucinations turned into a warped reality. I’ve always been a sucker for art that really catches you out for a few seconds, and these certainly do that.
I usually steer clear of anything smelling of disco-breaks: the thought just bores me. But with Padded Cell’s new release, Night Must Fall, I see a bit of a U-turn on the horizon. There’s something really interesting going on here: it’s a cocktail of 80’s swank laced with woozy narcotic undertones and flecked with snappy drum loops: weird, undeniably dark and ominous, but nonetheless pretty damn satisfying. These twin sixty-story towers to be built in Malaysia feature a combination of ‘continuous, flowing, double-curved perforated surface with a flickering, crystalline, transparent single-curved surface that is triangulated on an enormous scale’. The design by New York-based architectural firm, Asymptote, includes a 400,000 square foot retail section and the Penang Performing Arts centre.
Rarely is a film politically poignant as well as wonderfully written, acted and shot. The second feature from director Kimberly Peirce of Boys Don’t Cry was inspired by her brother, who joined the army, and was only possible after months of meticulous research. Read more
