Julie Nord
The Kunsthaus Baselland website has a nice description of Julie Nord’s work: ‘[Her illustrations] explore a surreal world, a universe of fairytales. They captivate the viewers’ attention as soon as they lay their eyes on them for the first time. Nord’s painting exudes an almost apocalyptical, end-of-days atmosphere. While initially the moths appear to be entirely harmless and quite lovely, they quickly turn into something menacing, a foreboding of a sinister deed to be done. In a comprehensive series of drawings, Julie Nord takes Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass as her points of departure. Nothing is interpreted literally; individual scenes dissolve into or delete others. The gaps existing in some drawings may be construed as patches of mental landscapes. They lend themselves well to be filled with personal thoughts. Nord’s ink drawings and paintings abound with idiosyncrasies of various kinds and follow an inherent narrative logic; its only connections to the real world outside are recognizable objects, animals, and human figures’.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. The philosophy of a beginning is to me, a wonderful concept. I really enjoy flicking through the back catalogues of a musician and discovering their origin, then tracing their musical journey to the present. So for American-born, Paris-based sister duo CocoRosie, who released their third album The Adventure of Ghosthouse and Stillborn to much acclaim, making the trip to their beginnings is more than worth the journey: their debut album, Le Maison de Mon Reve (released back in 2004) was a gentle stroll through their pop and classical influences, which melt together seamlessly into a backdrop for their unique and enchanting voices.
I’ve just come across the music of Minneapolis band Cloud Cult, and their song Chemicals Collide in particular. Their sound is a mix of scratchy acoustic guitar riffs mixed in with staccato beats and airy harmonies, all infused with a beautiful sense of lyrical melancholy. Read more
