Paper Sword
Third Drawer Down Gallery has a new exhibition running from July 7th 2007. Titled ‘Paper Sword: new works on paper’ it explores a current group of artists who have been working primarily on paper. It’s curated by Cinders Gallery from Brooklyn, NY. With a more back to basics DIY approach, the artists are part of a generation that has embraced simple tools such as pencil, pen, paint, and collage as well as influences ranging from comics, popular culture, punk rock, and psychedelia. This image features in the exhibition.

There’s something magic about being in the same space as those performing at the very height of their field. The Australian Chamber Orchestra have just kicked off their Great Romantics national tour and it was a treat to see them live in Newcastle, Australia for their first show. I’m no chamber orchestra aficionado, but I know good music when I hear it. And the tones played by lead violinist Richard Tognetti are as sweet as you could hope to hear. Can’t hurt having a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin under the chin. A tour worth checking out.

Skagen are a Danish-born design company based out of Nevada with an innovative and clean approach to their work. Their trademark product is this titanium mesh watch, which I’ve worn with pride for years. But they also produce different models of sunglasses and jewellery. When so many products these days offer extra gimmicks and weigh you down by their size, Skagen strip it all back and, in doing so, hoist themselves far above the pack.
