Sex, Bombs and Bliss
Kicking off on June 19th, the Sex, Bombs and Bliss exhibition at London’s Menier Gallery features the work of Australian artist Jonah Cacioppe and British sculptor Damian Fennell. As the London SE1 Community website notes: ‘Working together since 2001 and sharing a studio for a number of years Cacioppe and Fennell have produced a body of work addressing the enduring themes of beauty, death and the sublime. Cacioppe’s series of five large semi-abstract oil paintings of Baghdad night bombings, the Shock and Awe campaign of 2003, are taken from found reportage photography. Colour explodes on the canvas and conveys the sublime through overwhelming death and destruction’. [see more work by Jonah Cacioppe]

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. Samantha Everton’s latest exhibition, Vintage Dolls, explores ‘history, race and culture through magic realism’. Of the series, Everton says: ‘I was inspired by the innocent act of children playing dress ups and the way they re-enact adult behaviour, concepts and themes, without preconceptions or judgement’. The show runs at the Dickerson Gallery, Melbourne, between March 4-22 and at the Dickerson Gallery in Sydney between April 1-19.
Nestled in the hills of Napa Valley, Bardessono is the newest creation of eco-developer Phil Sherburne and architect Ron Mitchell. Completed just seven weeks ago, the luxurious inn and spa is currently pursuing Leed certification and includes rammed earth walls, water treatment systems, and solar and geothermal energy systems. The buildings were built to pay homage to the land, and include recycled cypress wood for the windows, doors, and floors. Read more
One Last Ounce is an experimental project exploring surreal imagery on an abstract cut. Says designer Jake Jelicich on his creative rationale: ‘I wanted to make thin, unique, comfortable tees that flowed and moved with the night. And I wanted the art to be dark, but sarcastic, mystical and inspiring, all in the same glance. Ten Masked Men are a British parody band that does death metal covers of famous pop songs by Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and many others. One of my favorites is their cover of Justin Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me a River’. It’s epic.
Last week when the 2008 ARIA nominations were released, I was so happy to see the recognition of Melbourne’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Their album Primary Colours is pure, unadulterated Aussie rock, standing out from the numerous electro releases we’ve had this year. The band manages to capture that wonderful pub-vibe without any pretension or tragic nostalgia. Primary Colours speaks to people who still seek an existence that is all about wearing ripped jeans, loitering and punching people in the face … not in a violent way, but because your fist flailed in that direction while you were thrashing around front of stage.
