Versatile Heart
Rufus Wainwright, that poperatic tour de force, has written a song for the new Linda Thompson album – Versatile Heart – called, appropriately enough, Beauty. And so it is. The song features a cameo from Antony of Antony and the Johnsons fame and it really is quite magnificent. Says Thompson on how it all came to be: ‘He came to my house one day and said, “I’ve written a song for you”. I was sitting in my bedroom and he took out a guitar and sang it for me. I nearly fell off the edge of the bed. His line “the world filled with goodness, only hidden by beauty” is so incredible. Most people only see beauty in the world – they don’t see the goodness’.

The idea behind Blippy is to use the public blackboard that is the burgeoning social media environment to monitor what your friends, and their friends, are spending their hard-earned money on. The Twitter-based platform encourages its members to upload their credit card details so that their online purchases are displayed in real time for all the world — or at least a voyeuristic few — to see.

Summertime at McCarren Park in Williamsburg is picturesque. It’s often filled with a mix of people, old and young, picnicking or sitting in the shade, running along the track or playing soccer (or football, depending on where you’re from). It’s also connected to a now defunct McCarren (swimming) pool which transforms into an outdoor concert space on Sundays during the summer. I don’t do yoga. I have nothing against it, but it just seems a little too new agey for me. However, if I do eventually try it, I’d like the instructor to put on Fabio Orsi’s moody, ambient, drone experiments. Using piano, guitar, percussion, field recordings, and various sampled elements, Orsi creates some beautiful, meditative pieces that, while undeniably fruity, are still weird enough to hold my interest.
