Versatile Heart

Rufus Wainwright, that poperatic tour de force, has written a song for the new Linda Thompson album – Versatile Heart – called, appropriately enough, Beauty. And so it is. The song features a cameo from Antony of Antony and the Johnsons fame and it really is quite magnificent. Says Thompson on how it all came to be: ‘He came to my house one day and said, “I’ve written a song for you”. I was sitting in my bedroom and he took out a guitar and sang it for me. I nearly fell off the edge of the bed. His line “the world filled with goodness, only hidden by beauty” is so incredible. Most people only see beauty in the world – they don’t see the goodness’.

Crimea X’s Secret Playlist

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. It was during the 80s when I was extremely young, and I’ve never stopped listening to this song’. Read the rest of Crimea X’s Secret Playlist.

The beguiling crudeness of Daniel Jensen’s work adds to its expressiveness — like the work of a psychotically precocious child, Jensen’s drawings, paintings, and sculptures seem slapped together in a mad frenzy, yet manage to display a deft sense of movement, depth, and demented emotion. Monet and The Impressionists is on display at Sydney’s Art Gallery of New South Wales until January 26, 2009. Alive with bold brushstrokes and dappled colours, the exhibit features 58 masterpieces by Cezanne, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro and Monet himself, among many others that have never been shown in Australia. It was amazing to view some of the finest quality works that revolutionised modern painting and the way natural light is portrayed on canvas. Go Monetise yourself and see Rough Weather, and all those serial haystack paintings.

Made from 100 percent organic cotton and eco-friendly, this super soft tee celebrates a sinister world of kaleidoscopic colours and ripples of psychedelia, of serenading Queens, of dancing flamingos, of unimaginable euphoria. It’s all the work of Sydney label, Das Monk and it’s available through the Lost At E Minor online store for just US$40. Now, there’s one hell of a Christmas present, even if we do say so ourselves!

If anyone ever asks you to define the word “schadenfreude,” show him or her these pictures of a poor skier hanging from a ski lift with his junk exposed to the alpine chill. If the person viewing the pictures laughs, he or she now understands the particularly useful German term.

Andrew Fagan, lead singer of The Mockers, the poppiest New Zealand band of the 80s, came around to my place once when I was an impressionable 10-year old with stars in my eyes and a head full of shiny, shiny melodies. Read more

Haunts is one twisted, skewered, pulsating, gyrating disco tune. Seriously. Jacob Safari, aka Bark, Bark, Bark, sure knows how to take a dirgey chord progression and dress it up in layers of disjointed, unsettling noise.

Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
