Versatile Heart
Rufus Wainwright, that poperatic tour de force, has written a song for the new Linda Thompson album – Versatile Heart – called, appropriately enough, Beauty. And so it is. The song features a cameo from Antony of Antony and the Johnsons fame and it really is quite magnificent. Says Thompson on how it all came to be: ‘He came to my house one day and said, “I’ve written a song for you”. I was sitting in my bedroom and he took out a guitar and sang it for me. I nearly fell off the edge of the bed. His line “the world filled with goodness, only hidden by beauty” is so incredible. Most people only see beauty in the world – they don’t see the goodness’.

Philip Hall studied illustration at Central Saint Martins, where he would often do very quick pictures in the space of minutes. Of his work, he says: ‘I work in a low tech way, which is when I realized that play within my work was very important to me. With Lungfish guitarist Asa Osborne’s latest project, Zomes, he continues to explore loops and cycles with endlessly repeating musical phrases, this time played on circuit-bent keyboards. The resulting tracks sound at times like medieval court music at others like the soundtrack to a Hal Hartley movie.
In late 80s and early 90s, the Illustrated Laser Ray and futuristic grids aesthetic was a sensation, years before it began to diminish abruptly. Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Offering fantastic bread, cheeses, produce, and cured meats such as sopressata and pepperoni, it was a great pit stop when my band played in town, and definitely more economical and tasty than hitting a greasy spoon for road snacks.
I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
