Being male and caring about fashion and style reached a tipping point long ago. Now we’ve entered the phase of self-indulgence where a styled men’s economy meets our needs at every turn. We aspire to be men’s men, with the know-how, etiquette and threads to think we’re men of the world. Whether or not we achieve that godly, Bond-esque status is besides the point. More importantly, we’ll enjoy the new raft of indulgent offerings thrust upon us and tell our mates of experiences catered to our every need. The freshly launched men’s high fashion stores, hair salons, fashion magazines and informed interviews may be designed to help us live more like Frank Vincent, but at the end of the day it’s the pleasure of it all, not the aspirations, that keeps us coming back for more. We’ve noticed an overwhelming number of hipster kids being photographed in need of the bathroom. The usual traits are legs crossed, feet turned in, desperation in the eye and holding on tight. It looks like we’re not the only ones. Hipsters Have To Pee is a photo-blog documenting the hilarity. Read more
I hadn’t heard of Skelator until the name was excitedly murmured amongst metal-heads in Seattle a couple of weeks ago. I’m new in town, so was dutifully checking out the local metal scene, and the Galway Arms was rammed with leather and spikes. There was a decidedly medieval theme, and I spotted at least one real sword. Read more
I disagree, but the Tights are not pants manifesto is pretty funny. There’s some history and arguments on why tights shouldn’t be worn as pants, and a downloadable kit with printable flyers to spread the word. A commendable effort. Do you agree tights are not pants? I’m all for tights as pants, as long they’re, ahem, worn well.

If gold fronts are just a little too flashy for you, head over to Salt Lake City where Steve Heward at Heward Dental Lab will give you a ‘dental tattoo‘, which is actually a crown onto which he or another one of his artists can paint an image of your choice.
UK illustrator Sophie Alda seems to capture that hazy second between sleep and wakefulness in her surreal images, which are executed in the most delicate of Easter egg colors.

It’s pretty bold to release a 25 track double CD as your first album, but singer-songwriter Benji Hughes doesn’t care. Themes of love and heartbreak run though the album and his folk-tinged pop draws comparisons to Beck, The Eels and The Magnetic Fields. [portrait by Vanessa Prager]

Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. Damn hipster dogs coming in here with their parents’ money, acting like they own the place, not respecting us real dogs who know what real culture and art are. We were here first and we knew about all those bands before they did. Read more

Scanners’ new single Salvation
I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
