It’s soothing and sumptuous. It’s Zebra by Beach House. The harmonious opening track of Teen Dream is lovely and ridden with reverb. I don’t care if the album was leaked early. These songs will endure the test of time, just like their self-titled album has.

The Knife’s Colouring of Pigeons
Why am I so fond of The Knife’s latest track? Yes, the opera chanting opening takes me down memory lane: reminiscent of Edea’s theme song, reminding me of childhood Final Fantasy VIII playstation days. But ultimately this collaborative effort with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock is ambitiously rich in sparkling percussion and takes the listener on an ethereal journey to Darwinism.

I’ve been on a severe Kinks kick as of late. So it’s not surprising that I’ve fallen in love with Princeton — an LA band similarly formed in part by brothers (in this case twins) Jesse and Matt Kivel. Princeton echoes soothing Washed Out beats, coupled with Biff Ross wit-romantic filled lyrics (‘Show Some Love, When Your Man Gets Home’), and the layered vocal harmonies of the Beach Boys. Calypso Gold, Princeton’s single, is a fine example of this mix with the added bonus of invoking LA’s fun-in-the-sun vibe anywhere you may be.

The idea behind Blippy is to use the public blackboard that is the burgeoning social media environment to monitor what your friends, and their friends, are spending their hard-earned money on. The Twitter-based platform encourages its members to upload their credit card details so that their online purchases are displayed in real time for all the world — or at least a voyeuristic few — to see.

I’ve been a big fan of Michelle Vandermeer’s work since I came across her Mini Majellen zines at this year’s Sydney Writers Festival. Describing herself as a doer — as in one of those people who are always doing or making something — Michelle’s work, which includes book binding, illustration, jewelery making and her zines, stems from an internal creative springboard and a double degree in architecture and graphic design. As a child, gold mining towns were exemplified in my mind by boring theme parks populated by out of work actors in naff colonial costumes. My parents used to drag us along in our overheated datsun because they couldn’t afford to take the kids to Disneyland. As often happens, I now appreciate the destinations whose mentions used to prompt a whole lot of whingeing about seatbelt buckle burns and compensation payouts of McDonalds. Walhalla is one such beauty. Set in the misty foothills of Australia’s Baw Baw ranges, it was once a gold era boom-town, but is now home to less than 20 residents (not counting the ghosts). Read more
