Jen Stark discusses her multi-layered paper artwork

Miami-based artist Jen Stark creates amazing sculptures using construction paper. More impressively, she does the whole thing by hand. Not only is it beautifully executed but her use of colour and proportion is fantastic, as this interview with her and behind the scenes look at the creative process reveals.

Jen Stark’s paper trail

Finally someone has found a use for those stacks of colored paper that sit in every office and never see the light of day. I could stare at Jen Stark’s mindblowing paper sculptures for hours and still never be totally sure where she started. Jen is also a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, where I’m currently teaching. [see more of Jen Stark's work]

The Kissaway Trail on My Secret Playlist

The Kissaway Trail have a new album entitled Sleep Mountain due for release on April 20, via Bella Union. Sleep Mountain adds in dabs of electronica to the breadth of guitars for a contemporary and vulnerable rock classic. We asked them about the music that inspired the recording. They started with the Joanna Newsom song, Peach, Plum, Pear [listen below]: ‘A really good song from a great debut album, made by one of the best female artists ever’. Flow eco rings

Flow is an eco friendly ring, made by assembling pieces of recycled straws, for those looking for a unique accessory. The ring band is given by using the elbow of a straw, which gives it a flexibility to be adapted to any extent. And combining patterns and colors, varying the number of pieces of drinking straws, you get an infinite variety of rings for any occasion, age, style, look — making the world cleaner and more colorful in the process. With their improvisational, pyschedelic sound, San Francisco band Wooden Shjips are putting the proverbial finger to the formulaic output of much of the current chart toppers. We interviewed guitarist Erik “Ripley” Johnson recently. Read more

This odd, atmospheric animation by web artists Aaron Russ Clinger and Miltos Manetas is simple but effective, a finely rendered piece of interactive art. There are some pretty crazy things you can make the floating man do if you play around with this long enough.

One of the things that hotels, and international hotel brands in particular, are often criticised for is a lack of identity, the feeling of being somewhere but nowhere simultaneously. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. One of the emerging trends in the industry is the personalization of hotels around a style or a theme, so feast your eye on 7 of the coolest and most individual themed hotels from around the world! Lush was one of the best bands to come out of the indie-tastic early ’90s. They set the standard for shoegazey, ethereal pop from the British Isles, and they were about to break big with their 1996 album Lovelife before drummer Chris Acland hanged himself in his parents’ home. The band is a bit of a forgotten gem at this point. Let’s cross our fingers for a reunion.

The Swimmers

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.

Scanners’ new single Salvation

I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
