Iceland has given rise to some interesting music over the past decade – Sigur Ros, Mom, and Bjork, amongst others. Next in line is Bang Gang, an unfortunately named group riding on the rather talented coat tails of producer and songwriter Bardi Johannsson. Their record label have a contest going at the moment whereby you can remix the Bang Gang track It’s Alright and possibly win a trip to Iceland. Heck, they’ll probably throw in a free set of steak knives as well. Though that’s not guaranteed. ‘To create your remix, download isolated multi-tracks of It’s Alright, then use them and whatever else you have up your sleeve. Just no illegal samples’. Describing their sound as ‘nihilist suicide pop’, Rome-based quartet Spiritual Front draws immediate comparisons to Nick Cave, but their approach to dark themes have a hint of irreverence — they inject unexpected doo-wop flares and new wave bombast to their atmospheric neofolk. I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally.
