We’ve got 10 double passes for the Sydney screening of Michel Gondry’s upcoming movie The Science of Sleep. Described as ‘a whimsical trip into a cut-and-paste wonderland fashioned from cardboard tubes, cellophane, and imagination’, the latest creation from the award-winning Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, music videos for Foo Fighters and The White Stripes) features starring performances from Gael Garcia Bernal (Babel) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (Lemming). To be in the running for a double pass either leave a comment under this posting saying why you really want to see this movie (and let’s face it, Gondry’s genius alone is a damn good reason) or forward this post onto at least five friends by April 30. Winners will be announced below. Click the ‘read more’ link for a full synopsis of the movie.
‘The Science of Sleep, a playful romantic fantasy set inside the topsy-turvy brain of Stephane Miroux (Gael Garcia Bernal), an eccentric young man whose dreams constantly invade his waking life. While slumbering, he is the charismatic host of ‘Stephane TV’, expounding on ‘The Science of Sleep’ in front of cardboard cameras. In ‘real life’, he has a boring job at a Parisian calendar publisher and pines for Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg), the girl in the apartment across the hall. While Stephanie is initially charmed by Stephane, she is confused by his childishness and shaky connection to reality. Stephane’s co-worker, Guy (Alain Chabat) a vulgar but practical man, offers advice on the opposite sex, but Stephane is too far in the clouds to listen. Unable to find the secret to Stephanie’s heart while awake, Stephane searches for the answer in his dreams’.

We’re not shy about our love of all things 80s, and Goldfrapp’s Rocket clip has taken us right back to a cloudy pastel world of big hair, synth optimism and glittering disco. We might just stay here for a while. Who’s in?
We’ve noticed an overwhelming number of hipster kids being photographed in need of the bathroom. The usual traits are legs crossed, feet turned in, desperation in the eye and holding on tight. It looks like we’re not the only ones. Hipsters Have To Pee is a photo-blog documenting the hilarity. Read more
I hadn’t heard of Skelator until the name was excitedly murmured amongst metal-heads in Seattle a couple of weeks ago. I’m new in town, so was dutifully checking out the local metal scene, and the Galway Arms was rammed with leather and spikes. There was a decidedly medieval theme, and I spotted at least one real sword. Read more

To fall asleep and be awaken in a world created by Michel, that does not hinder the suffocation of reality.

Why do I want to see?
I have been blind for most of my life and don’t get me wrong I don’t have a pervading sense of sorrow and aching heart, for my “misfortune” in having been denied the opportunity to interact in the world with the benefit of an intact, healthy body. I’ve never wallowed in bitterness and self-pity, I learned to use his remaining senses of hearing, touch, smell, and taste to become a happy, positive, and resourceful human being, with a keen sensitivity toward — and appreciation of — the world and the people around me. I’ve recently regained my sight and cannot describe the world I see before me, colours so loud and vibrant the world is screaming with life. Some times I close my eyes and long for my cocooned life again where everything made sense. I feel this film would be an important step in my journey to come to terms with the overwhelming emotions before me and an amazing introduction to the world of the visual.
Oh and I love winning free shit.

I’m really enjoying the beautiful work of artist Mike Bertino. Each piece is like ten stories crammed full of pop references and then wedged cheek-to-cheek into one glorious, colorful piece of surreal, eye popping goodness. Read more
Australian-born creative, Marc Newson, is considered to be one of the most influential designers of the past few decades. Having originally studied jewellery and sculpture at Sydney College of the Arts, ‘he started experimenting with furniture design as a student and, after graduating in 1984, was awarded a grant from the Australian Crafts Council, and staged an exhibition — featuring the Lockheed Lounge — at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery in Sydney’. Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.
When you first see The Gershwin Hotel, you might think it’s an art gallery or a public art installation. The white, bird-like shapes sticking out of its red facade is certainly unique, without being too loud. The rooms are rather small but the location and accessible price range makes it all worth it.
Hotly tipped by a handful of soothsayers to take 2009 by storm, Trembling Bells are an altogether different and refreshing musical experience to much of what seems to excite people at the moment. On first listen, it’s fairly easy to ignore — one could casually shrug it off as some limp take on Scottish baroque folk. Yet, there is something more to it. Rarely do you hear that high-pitched, warbling voice in mainstream music. Likewise the marching band cacophony going on in the background is both daring and highly intriguing.

Scanners’ new single Salvation
I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
