Millions of white-clothed writhing bodies, minds jaded and souls transfixed, captivated by Israeli trance act Infected Mushroom. The set was Ipanema beach, Rio De Janeiro. The date was New Years Eve 2006. The world’s biggest party was well underway and, while memories of actual events may be dusty, the emotions will never be forgotten. Ever met those travellers who never shoot photographs? Picking an album for each nation, this new breed of modern backpacker listens to a nation’s album repeatedly, ingraining a sensory experience of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell recalled whenever the precious tunes are heard. I did this in reverse, finally acquiring Infected Mushroom’s ‘Vicious Delicious’ long after the sun rose over Ipanema. I must have several hundred photographs taken during travels in Brazil, and no memories are more vivid than those recalled when spinning Infected Mushroom’s tracks. Not just an album of trance anthems, but a collection of private memories never forgetten and seldom shared.

The AP Tour brought metalcore music heavyweights and a convoy of sponsor vans head-first into a stormy Seattle last night. The Hurley denim reps were rattled; they’d endured a long drive from Utah through what they described as the worst weather they’d ever experienced. Joking around with them before the show I realised how shaken up these guys actually were; hands were still shaking and their laughter was racked by nerves. Read more

There’s a great story behind this prog-surf film. Riley Blakeway was an aspiring surf film-maker with incredible talent and a handfull of small film projects to his name. Chippa Wilson was a relatively unknown but amazing aerial surfer without the opportunity to show the world what he could do. In 2009, they won STAB magazine’s Little Weeds competition, respectively taking out the film-maker and surfer prizes. Read more

On the roof of Bangkok’s Banyan Tree Hotel is a dining experience like no other. The Vertigo Bar sits sixty one floors up, and serves delicious gourmet meals and cocktails. These are expensive by Thai standards, but cheap enough for shoestring travellers to indulge in now and then (a cocktail costs around AUD$12). I’ve spent hour after hour in the bar, drinking and smoking and taking in the amazing view. Most nights at Vertigo end the same, with fast-moving storm clouds rolling in without fail at about eleven pm. While wait staff scurry to move tables, and drunken diners navigate the steep stairs down to the safety of the hotel, the more hardy can sit and watch the clouds race closer and closer towards the building, soaking in both the atmosphere and the rainwater until the lightning gets too close for comfort.
So I can’t understand a word on this Japanese blog, and neither do I really want to. No, there’s something intrinsically calming about staring at cute photos of cute cats, even more so when they’re balancing things precariously on their heads. Read more
At a gig last year Foals were forced to abandon their last song halfway through because the stage was stormed by too many crazed fans. The reason behind the hype they’re creating, both on stage and in the normally merciless media, isn’t immediately clear upon first listen: the sound is less than friendly on the ears, and they don’t employ the same catchy hooks and melodic chorus patterns that shoot your average band to fame in their early years.
