Rinpa Eshidan
‘Lost’ is the most recent film production in the urban art series produced by Tokyo-based art crew Rinpa Eshidan. These amazing short films document urban art creations with time-lapsed, predominantly black and white visuals, focusing more on the process of creating art than the outcome. Always inspiring, ‘Lost’ is no exception and is set to an intriguing soundtrack. The full series is available on the Rinpa Eshidan YouTube channel.

Life-Sized RX78 Gundam Mobile Suit
Japan certainly takes its giant robots seriously. As reported by Moe Passion, a blog by an American sailor stationed in Japan, a life-sized replica of a Gundam RX78 Mobile Suit was recently built on the artificial island of Odaiba in Tokyo Bay. It’s up until August 31st, so go see it while you can.

I hadn’t heard of Skelator until the name was excitedly murmured amongst metal-heads in Seattle a couple of weeks ago. I’m new in town, so was dutifully checking out the local metal scene, and the Galway Arms was rammed with leather and spikes. I disagree, but the Tights are not pants manifesto is pretty funny. There’s some history and arguments on why tights shouldn’t be worn as pants, and a downloadable kit with printable flyers to spread the word. A commendable effort. Do you agree tights are not pants? I’m all for tights as pants, as long they’re, ahem, worn well.

Think Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear meets Arthur Russell. We got the rundown from him on his eight favourite songs right now and he kicked off with The Shangri-Las’ Out In The Streets [listen below]: ‘1:22 – 1:43 is a miracle. I’ve never been so obsessed with twenty seconds of high-hat and high school girl shrieks: it’s a raging teenage fantasy that all the composition notebooks in all the lockers of 1965 couldn’t write better. Despite their jarring name, British noise duo Fuck Buttons are surprisingly palatable. The band’s long, droning tracks are infused with sweet twinkles and sunny synth, but dark shards of ominous guitar overdrive and distorted screeches pierce the shimmering surface just when you’re ready to zone out. Danceable beats occasionally draw everything back together, creating a stormy, pulsing, and disorienting atmosphere.
This remarkable construction is located in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi and is built entirely from scratch every year. It features 10,000 tonnes of ice from the nearby Torne River, and 30,000 tonnes of snow, covering more than 30,000 square feet in total. Oh, it even has its own ice chapel. But be sure to bring your winter woollens. It could get a little, errr, chilly at night. Read more
