Illustration / Rubens LP

Brazilian illustrator Rubens LP ‘remembers spending hours as a child drawing comic heroes like Wolverine, Superman, Batman and the X-men with his father’. These days his work retains much of that childhood innocence, albeit tempered by the subtle touch of contemporary pop culture. Of his illustrations he says, ‘I don’t draw with my mind; I draw with the soul. And everything inspires my soul. Everything’. [see also Favela Painting Project]

Gregory Euclide

I love the sense of space and subtle introspection that seeps through Gregory Euclide’s artwork. His says of his latest series, ‘my work explores the way we experience nature and how this is tied to the cultural practice of constructing landscapes as idealized images. When we are in nature we experience the world through all of our senses in a dynamic way, but at the same time we are framing what we see through the cultural expectations we have absorbed through representational systems such as landscape painting, wildlife documentary, and travel guides. It is impossible, then, to have a true, non-mediated experience of nature even though we may long for it. My work explores the contradictions between the projection of idealized, picturesque views of landscape and our desire to have an authentic experience in nature’. Read more

Czech painter Victor Safonkin does some pretty impressive neo-classical/surrealist paintings that pay homage to all the masters while having a quirky style all their own. They are thankfully free of snarky pop-culture references and irony, which makes the images timeless and strikingly beautiful. Read more

Describing their sound as ‘nihilist suicide pop’, Rome-based quartet Spiritual Front draws immediate comparisons to Nick Cave, but their approach to dark themes have a hint of irreverence — they inject unexpected doo-wop flares and new wave bombast to their atmospheric neofolk. Their latest album, Armageddon Gigalo, is a beautiful and catchy masterpiece for fans of Death In June, Sol Invictus, and even latter-day Duran Duran.

The AirPiano is an innovative musical interface which allows the playing and controlling of software instruments simply by moving your hands in the air. Above the AirPiano is a virtual matrix of keys and faders, each assigned with MIDI messages ready to be triggered. The length of a triggered note is equivalent to the time a hand is placed on the corresponding virtual key, which is also confirmed by LED feedback.

What a wonderfully grown up ethos of punk is to be found in the latest effort by New Zealand’s Stolen Girlfriends Club. I saw sequin, lace, leather, denim, tulle, rhinestone and what appeared to be heshen, breaking all the rules of taste but nevertheless making me very, very happy. Read more

No one disputes that the Bush Administration is no friend to civil liberties, but this little spot on the ACLU website smacks of paranoia. At least it’s entertaining, and some people might actually welcome the ultra-convenient vision of the future this piece of propaganda offers.

In Los Angeles, in the gas guzzling centre of the Universe, BP has enlisted Office dA to embrace the paradoxical task of creating a green petrol station. Read more

Melbourne’s Klein Bottle House

I love the interesting lines and clever use of sustainable materials found in the Klein Bottle House, a holiday place in Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Rich People’s Rooftops NYC

The wealthy of this cramped metropolis we call New York don’t have lavish backyards — they have rooftops. Jwilly’s Rich People Rooftops NYC set on Flickr documents the spaces where the uber-rich of Gotham throw their cookouts, compost their kitchen scraps, or lounge on hot summer days high above our humble heads.
