I had a delectable time at the Cook. Eat. Drink. Live foodie event in New York a few weeks back, sampling the wares of an eclectic range of goodies, eating way too much chocolate (though, really, how much is way too much?), and drinking enough wine to fill up the belly of a small, albeit plump, hamster. And I came out of the experience, the lip-smackingly, hip-shakingly fun experience, with just one simple conclusion: the world needs more of these events, where the only objective is to stuff your gullet and drink, drink, drink. A Melbourne native once said to me: to find the good bars, you have to look for the bins in alleyways. Section 8 totally fits that quota. It is a bar that is a. in an alleyway, and b. filled with trash. As enticing as that sounds, I must make it clear that the alleyway is actually an old carpark in Chinatown and the trash is not exactly trash. But don’t let that stop you. Section 8 is pumping. The Sound of Animals Fighting again unleash their experimental blend of progressive electronic hardcore rock. Known only by their animal names — Nightingale, Walrus, Lynx, and Skunk — and wearing masks for their rare live appearances, TSOAF have released two albums. Their latest, The Ocean and The Sun, offers an intense mix of genres, as delicate Brazilian-inflected melodies careen into shattering guitar workouts.
No one disputes that the Bush Administration is no friend to civil liberties, but this little spot on the ACLU website smacks of paranoia. At least it’s entertaining, and some people might actually welcome the ultra-convenient vision of the future this piece of propaganda offers.
