An ‘annual online festival presenting the best in international short film and internet video culture’, the Portable Film Festival 2007 has announced this year’s categories and entries are open from March 19 until May 30. A unique film festival with worldwide acclaim, the Portable Film Festival meets our need to consume media quickly in easily digestible chunks no matter where we are – all films can be viewed online or downloaded to a video iPod, Sony PSP, laptop computer or suitable mobile phone. Last year’s entry ‘Maestro‘ scored an Oscar nomination, demonstrating the shift towards portable premium video content the whole world is following. Based in Melbourne, the organisers of the Portable Film Festival are shaking up film presentation and syndication for the better, sharing portable content across the globe and equally promoting film makers of various backgrounds and abilities. Already with a Spectrum show under their belt, The Archerbolds are an up and coming Australian band well worth checking out. I saw the Sydney-based lads play recently at the Mars Hill Café and it was evident that they should be permanently rocking out on a real stage; not in front of coffee sippers. Their floating lyrics, smart guitar riffs and meaty bass lines are infused by The Strokes, Mars Volta, The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin — ultimately producing a freshly spun modern-vintage sound. Lead vocalist and guitarist Geoffrey ‘Gep’ Rectin says The Archerbolds plan to create a solid sound for next year: ‘Over summer, we’re recording an EP and working on a set sound, defining more of an image’. If their track, Rest Your Soul, is anything to go by, then it should be pretty dandy.

Almanac Market in Philadelphia is slightly pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. Offering fantastic bread, cheeses, produce, and cured meats such as sopressata and pepperoni, it was a great pit stop when my band played in town, and definitely more economical and tasty than hitting a greasy spoon for road snacks.
