Interview with Melbourne rockers Trial Kennedy, fresh from recently stealing a closing slot from The Deftones and deservedly so. You guys put on a fun, refreshing and impressively tight show at Sydney’s Soundwave festival. How did you score the closing slot? ‘To be completely honest it must have been a scheduling stuff up to put little ol’ Trial Kennedy on after the almighty Deftones, not that we were complaining. In hindsight I thought we just got out there and played the show that we usually do and we were just so happy that people stayed around in the rain, it was amazing. It was a great feeling coming off stage’. Which album inspires you the most when you’re on the road? ‘You pretty much just want sing alongs when you’re on the road, you just need something to stay awake. I’m always inspired by The Beatles’ White Album, or Jimmy Eat World, or the Waifs or even Michael Jackson’. What can we expect to see from you over the next 12 months? ‘An album from Trial Kennedy hopefully very soon’.

The Hurley denim reps were rattled; they’d endured a long drive from Utah through what they described as the worst weather they’d ever experienced. Joking around with them before the show I realised how shaken up these guys actually were; hands were still shaking and their laughter was racked by nerves. Read more
NOW: an Analog Moving Picture Project
There’s a great story behind this prog-surf film. Riley Blakeway was an aspiring surf film-maker with incredible talent and a handfull of small film projects to his name. Chippa Wilson was a relatively unknown but amazing aerial surfer without the opportunity to show the world what he could do. In 2009, they won STAB magazine’s Little Weeds competition, respectively taking out the film-maker and surfer prizes. Read more

Next big things don’t often come as hot as Melbourne band, The Galvatrons. They’re still on the low down, but with a debut album on the way, this band will soon be everywhere. The four-piece rock-synth outfit do glam 80s better than the 80s acts did, with the attire to match. Currently on a small-scale tour of Australia, they’re worth seeing now before the crowds arrive. The Galvatrons have also already played the country’s biggest festivals, and supported Australian rock royalty such as The Presets, The Panics and You Am I.

Illustrator and artist John Malloy has been working on a graphic novel called Channel One and, without wanting to sound too much like Paris Hilton, it’s looking pretty damn hot. Update! As of July 2009, John Malloy has aborted the graphic novel Channel One to focus more on other projects, including his autobiographical graphic novel, Queasy. Stay tuned for details. Read more
Whitest Boy Alive follow their own rules: no overdubs, no FX, and the music is always recorded live in one take. Fronted by Erlend Øye (of Kings Of Convenience notoriety), the Berlin collective produce a distinctive blend of minimalist melodies and pillowy grooves. And on the eleven tracks that constitute their new album, Rules, they convey one polite directive: please, move your body.
