Using captivating artwork to rebuild a community in the wake of disaster, Degrees of Separation is a book of ‘33 detachable postcards that express people’s experiences and reflections upon Hurricane Katrina and its devastating aftermath’ by graphic designers living in, from, and connected to New Orleans. It started out as an online postcard magazine for designers linked to the area, and the original deadline for submissions was in fact the day Hurricane Katrina struck. Founder Samia Saleem was displaced from her New Orleans home and transformed Degrees of Separation into an outlet for designers to share experiences and reflection on the disaster, producing the book in a limited edition of 750 copies with 5% of proceeds going to the AIGA New Orleans Design Educational Fund.

I love art that scares me a little. Erica Eyres somehow manages to make subtly unnerving drawings of distorted figures using nothing more than a ballpoint pen and a piece of paper. She renders shockingly realistic hair, yet skews the proportions and features of her subjects, exaggerating their expressions and making them look monstrous.
Schmidt, Hammer and Lassen’s design for the Copenhagen national library is a celebrated structure in the already glittering design portfolio of northern Europe. The marble and glass façade of The Black Diamond (yes, that is what their national library is called) is an example of architectural brilliance, with even the angled walls designed to best mirror the city’s beautiful canals.
I wasn’t aware of who Emilio Pucci was until my work was compared to his for the hundredth time. I’m happy to have anyone make that connection. I’m not a high fashion person. I keep to the basics and feel alright about it. The introduction to his work was mind blowing for me. Not only for the rich colors and patterns, but how those things worked with the human form. It was an interesting revelation, and one that has sparked more interest for me to explore fashion as a medium for art.
