Wabi-sabi, meaning ‘beauty in imperfection’ in Japanese, has been a trend in the fashion scene for quite a while, manifesting itself in the recent deconstruction craze and the love of all things handmade. However it has never been the domain of jewelry, where polished perfection has always been its defining quality. Till now, that is. Argentum, a Singaporean accessories label, produces intricately crafted jewellery pieces that drip with wabi-sabi. With an errant fray of a ribbon here and a metal mesh poking its head out there, it’s the ultimate ornamentation for urban tribes-people. [see also Lydia Holt]

The Canadian-born artist’s illustrations of long, flowing, shampoo TVC-worthy, liquid-looking locks wrap around various portraits and situations, forming an intriguing mix of medieval folklore, nature and elements of the human form. Featured in publications like Tokion and Arkitip, this is the world’s first enactment of Rapunzel’s Freudian dreams.

Despite their over-the-top rockisms (ridiculously monstrous rigs, smoke machines, and high-wattage light show), Jucifer backs the bombast up with some colon-bursting heaviness. The duo from Athens, Gergia, take 90s-era grrl rawk and combines it with slow, plodding, sludge metal like High on Fire on Vicodin.
Michael Wolf, a German born American photographer, has lived in Hong Kong since 1995. His work explores the ways city-dwellers in China and Hong Kong shape their surroundings in an ‘organic metropolis’. His series — Architecture of Density — has some breathtaking images of Hong Kong’s apartment buildings.

Dead in the Now is a great new web comic by an artist named Rey about a boy who decides to raise an army of zombies. The style is anime inspired, but really loose and unfussy. There’s an almost frantic, psychedelic feel to it, which makes it unique. Not your typical fanboy fare.
I was just recently introduced to the work of artist Misaki Kawai. I must say that my interest in her work has since become something of a creative obsession. Her trippy, child-like figures and animals, painted in the most expressive, perfectly satisfying candy colored hues, are more than enough to send me running for the bag of jelly beans and jolly ranchers hidden in my cupboard.
