Nique [giveaway]

We’re big fans of Australian streetwear label Nique. Their clothes are distinctive and edgy, with great cuts and fabrics. The designers behind the label. Nick and Lucy Ennis. have no formal training in fashion and have therefore come at it from a completely fresh and unaffected perspective. Working out of Melbourne, Nique are slowly infiltrating hip boutiques throughout the country. They recently promoted the label with an ad on the Lost At E Minor website and now they have given us five t-shirts [above left] to give away to random Lost At E Minor subscribers who send this post to 3 or more friends or leave a message under this posting with two good reasons why you should get one. Entries close Feb 18 and winners will be announced under this posting.

Looking for the perfect gift? Check out this selection of cool presents or this one for the person who, literally, has everything.
Sign up to receive the special Ron English edition of the free Lost At E Minor newsletter in which the counter-culture art legend writes about his favorite cultural discoveries.

Crazy chairs from the Campana brothers

Who said chairs had to be boring? Or practical? This range of chairs from designer brothers, Fernando and Humberto Campana, nicely blurs the line between form and functionality, art and science. Read more

I would love one to give to my bro. He’s a bit down after an injury, so maybe a hot new shirt would lift his spirits.

1. I have a hot new boyfriend (this took me 29 years to achieve and thus deserves a reward).

2. He has terrible dress sense. It’s more subtle to manipulate a partner’s wardrobe via winning clothes rather than buying them.

*I’ve recently stopped believing in Santa Claus as one singular entity but believe his spirit be manifested, on a daily basis, in many human beings. I specifically need some confirmation.

2. Chuck Norris doesn’t wear a watch, HE decides what time it is.

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.

Philly indie rock group Dr Dog recently compiled a crackling Secret Playlist for us which included props for songs by Cass McCombs, Thunderclap Newman, and the new time rag star, A.A Bundy, about whose track, Vice Rag, keyboardist Zach Miller wrote: ‘Good enough to be a classic old timey melody, except with more contemporary lyrical vices added. Great guitar playing’. And so it is [yup, the proof's in the audio below]. You can read more about Dr Dog’s favourite songs via the My Secret Playlist website.

Sparks’ album Kimono My House is a demented mix of hard rock, pop, glam, new wave, and baroque pop. Why this record never caught on in the States I’ll never know. The songs will get stuck in your head and prevent you from sleeping. Oh yeah, and the keyboard player has a nice mustache too, as evidenced by this track above — This Town Ain’t Big Enough.

The Suit Up exhibition comprises a number of artworks from various Australian street, comic, and illustration artists, each of whom has applied their unique style to that ubiquitous — yet, rarely tapped — canvas, the playing card. The designs have been produced as giclee prints, signed and numbered by the artists, and are limited to 10 prints of each design. Real-size decks of cards have also been produced for sale. The Suit Up crew is a close-knit group of predominantly Melbourne-based artists who are passionate about Australia’s ‘low-brow’ art scene, which is more collaborative and less ego-driven than much of the the high-brow art world. The exhibition runs between February 13 and 25.

These scarves designed by Sarah Swash and her boyfriend Toshio Yamanaka always feature their whippet and play on a sense of urban sophistication inspired by the surrounds of their East London studio. Definitely a justified indulgence.

Scanwiches

Chris Ware

Chris Ware is my favorite comic book artist. If there’s a new Chris Ware book out, I buy it, no questions asked. He writes the most somber, sad stories about the simplest of people, but they’re written and illustrated with such beauty and elegance. All of the text and graphic design is done by hand. It’s absolutely mind blowing. Read more

The WorldToilet blog

When I was living in China, a friend of mine had an idea to publish a guidebook about the country’s bathrooms because many expats spend the first few months living abroad going through unfortunate, awkward, and nightmarish experiences coping with sanitation issues, squat toilets, and curious locals trying to catch a glimpse of Western junk. WorldToilet.info is a hilarious but very useful resource for travelers wondering what to expect and how to behave in various exotic locals when nature calls.

Joe Sorren

We asked Arizona-based artist Joe Sorren what we would have been if he hadn’t been handed the most ridiculously generous serving of artistic talent: ‘Art historian and conservationalist. Or a botanist. Or I’d work with horses. It would be interesting to be behind the scenes in politics, at least for a while. Or maybe a studio musician, or invent games, or a … I would rather paint’. Ah, we agree.
