Flak Photo

There’s some cool things going down on Flak Photo, a dedicated photo based website and photography blogzine featuring work from an international community of photographers. As they say, ‘in November 2004, we launched our photoblog, which has grown into a collection of hundreds of images from over forty photographers from around the globe. Last year, we began producing interactive photo essays that blend images with audio commentary, text and graphics to create an engaging multimedia experience’. Are you seriously using a light meter to tell how bright your computer screen is? You might as well sign up for our free weekly newsletter.
We've just launched a new website: The Colour, Australian culture in pictures. Check it out and give props to your favourite Australian artists, musicians and designers.

Alison Brady presents the human form as if it were either a strange plant or a plastic toy uncovered in a middle-American backyard. At once disturbing and whimsical, Brady’s images depict bodies ill-fitted to their environments, as if they were discarded, forgotten, or malfunctioning. Read more

Three piece, cLOUDDEAD, who formed in Cincinnati at the tail-end of the last millenium, fuse traditional hip hop beats with indie, electronica and psy-rock overtones. Doesone and Why?’s layered, poetic vocals cover the personal, political and social elements of their lives; and, above all, their flatout rejection of traditional musical boundaries makes them a quirky and unique act.

Pickle Hut was designed by architect Dan Hoffman and The Cranbrook Architectural Office. It is a place where the children of Brookside School can play, recite stories and dream. Set up for children to enter into this mysterious U-Shape building, the Pickle Hut offers up a little hub of sanctuary in order to let their imaginations fly. If only I had such a magical edifice to call my own and run to when head nun, Sister Mary, was on one of her many Catholic tirades. Eek! [photo by Paul Hitz]

Marc Jacobs’ newly unleashed Autumn 08 collection hit the stage this week and if there is an international designer who I couldn’t appreciate any more, then it’s Marc. His signature patent-leather goods are the apple of my eyes and I think my MJ leather-quilted wallet, stam-bag and ballet mouse flats are being overlooked for Mark Jacob’s freshly launched red velvet trimmed pumps. Car from made ice

Forget battery powered vehicles. Cars made from ice are the future of transportation: no pollution, no honking horns, no painful rap music blasting out of souped up stereos. And if they melt, they melt. You just swim the rest of the way down the slipstream.

Creative advertising packaging

Despite the intentions of many, it’s not so often that advertising — as an industry — truly thinks outside the box. Yet, when executed well, clever eye-catching advertising actually works. It does. As these examples will attest to. Read more

The Swimmers

I live the upbeat, feel good tempo of the new single — A Hundred Hearts — from Philly group, The Swimmers. Off their latest album, People Are Soft, this song is a strangely fitting anthem for the blustery day outside.
