Sounding more like a bad pre-mixed cocktail, US band Beach House categorise themselves as Tropical Hawaiian Trance. The Baltimore duo create fuzzy hushed vocals drawing inevitable Mazzy Star comparisons. The sighing slide guitar and spidery organ induce hazy end of summer nostalgia.

World-renowned for stylish environmentally sustainable archicture [examples pictured], Melbourne-based architect Andrew Maynard recently announced Corb v2.0, a revolutionary experimental housing project that Treehugger says is ‘beyond brilliant’ and the ‘best idea of the year’. Far from a typical container project, Corb v2.0 consists of a series of highly portable small apartments that are periodically shifted, randomly or as requested, by a wind powered crane. Sounds crazy huh? The design makes a lot of sense… neighbours can group apartments together for communal parties, premium top-floor views can be shared and common areas can be re-created as required to find the best fit for the neighbourhood. Combining practicality, sustainability and community, Corb v2.0 is revolutionising conventional housing concepts to create a more flexible, personable built environment with a minimal environmental footprint.

A ‘think tank from Switzerland that does experimental research on new ways of thinking and the power of the imagination’, the Imaginary Foundation produces intriguing tees adorned with fine works of art. Despite Swiss origins the company is led from a head office in California, conveniently close to the office of famed blog BoingBoing, which subsequently led to a collaboration between the two companies on a tee design last year. More recently, a range of nine fresh designs has just launched and individual artworks are also available for purchase.

I’m a big fan of blue skies. Not surprisingly, I love the work of Yves Klein and his patented blue. I took this photo up the north coast of NSW at a still-functioning lighthouse. I love the way the white structure forms a silhouette against the sky, bringing out the great blue behind it and the moon, which just appears in the background.

Homewares isn’t usually a word that you’d associate with music. Especially with Les Savy Fav, a band known for their concoction of dissonant pop, driving bass, disco drumming, bratty guitars, and spastic vocals. Lead singer Tim Harrington has taken his manic onstage enthusiasm, the design skills of his wife and channeled it into a range of patterned products. Deadly Squire aims to bring the sublime and exotic to the everyday and blur the line of where home and apparel meets. The products range from oven mitts to plates and bags but the winner is a cruiser skateboard complete with Deadly Squire branding and patterned deck.

Our friends over at Sex In Art just keep pushing out great content. Justin and Carrie have been doing this now for about a year, and my guess is it’s probably one of the highest trafficked sites for its type in Australia. While not work friendly, it’s about so much more than just sex. Definitely worth checking out.

The twee Malaysian cover band, The Ferns’ debut album On Botany comprises of actual Astroturf glued on to cardboard, epitomising their quirky charming sound. Sweet dreamy melodies and the innocent coo of a falsetto play the role of rainforest oxygen to the weary trekker. It’s the aural equivalent of a gentle make-out session on the meadow, virgins frolicking in a virgin rainforest. Recently named as Rolling Stone’s Top 25 Best Bands on Myspace, this whiff of foliage will permeate 2007 on an international level, mark my words.

Developing a surprisingly fluid tale is A Million Penguins, the ‘collaborative, wiki-based creative writing exercise’ co-managed by Penguin Books. Upon launch it was questioned whether a collective could create a fictional voice. ‘How does a plot find any sort of coherent trajectory when different people have a different idea about how a story should end - or even begin?’ Proving the crowdsourcing model as a viable creative platform, perhaps the next stage in collaborative publishing is enhancing the aesthetics by including vibrant illustrations - such as these works by London-based illustrator Emily Canino.

Interview with Danish indie five-piece The Kissaway Trail. With two songwriters and two vocalists can it be hard to agree on creative direction? ‘No, not so far, rather the opposite. As we don’t write the songs together there is really nothing to discuss in the initial creative process. So far it has been much more of a strength as we inspire one another a lot’. We hear your producer is 20 years old. Very impressive. How did you discover him? ‘I know Niels from a while back. Later Søren and I took a Music Production course with him and he produced a couple of demos with other projects we did seperately pre The Kissaway Trail. When he heard some of the demos for what was to become the Kissaway Trail’s debut album, he said that he simply had to produce the album. And what he had to offer was great, so the rest is history’. So what’s this trail you’re kissing away? ‘Hopefully it is a trail leading to a lot of good experiences and which wil eventually take us to Australia’.

Against Me! put out an awesome album called New Wave last year. It was produced by Butch Vig, who did Nirvana’s Nevermind, and is just brilliant. I fell in love with it when it came out, and covered the whole album, beginning to end, putting it up for free on my website and Myspace page. It was a tribute. It’s so important for me to stay connected to the part of me that is just a music fan.
