Melbourne illustrator Sarah Hankinson creates distinctly feminine yet bold and dramatic works which play off broken lines and occasional splashes of colour. She uses a variety of mediums, from ink to pencil, fabric to cut paper. Some of her illustration work is currently exhibited at Design A Space Retail Gallery, on Chapel St, Windsor in Melbourne. Scene360, an online film, art, music and literature magazine, is presenting The Art of Interpretation. As they say, ‘we invite you to become an interpreter. Leave history books and Google searches aside; we want you to look at art pieces and make your own conclusions. Write it in words. What you describe can be just as dazzling as the art in itself’. There are two new works for interpretation - Slashed by Anna Fowler and The Scream by Edvard Munch. ‘Each interpretation can be a short comment, story, whatever you see in the artwork’. We love the music of South African-born, London-based producer Mira Calix. It’s rustic, cerebral and slow-building, kinda like that first slither of daylight that stirs the morning heartbeat. We interviewed her recently about her new album, Eyes Set Against The Sun. You’ve done a lot of installation soundscapes for galleries and the like. What does that medium offer that an album perhaps doesn’t? ‘When I’m writing music for a particular space or for a function, to help communicate something that has come from someone else’s needs, it means I have to consider that space in so many different ways - the position of the audience, the speakers, the room size and so on - as well as trying to create an atmosphere and language to tell the ’story’ that needs to be told. It means there is a lot to consider when writing. Sometimes really it’s more like problem solving, but coming up with ’solutions’ - things that work. I guess that is what is really stimulating to me because it challenges me to think and sometimes take a different approach. It’s very different to my own studio work. All I really have to consider then is my own desire’.

The simple friendly lines, colours and designs of the Bogota-based Guda Lab is inspired by 60s - 70s style and has been wisely applied to a vast range of spaces - retail stores, offices, and kitchens - and products such as lamps, carpets and mirrors. Created by industrial designers Diana Alarcon and Guillermo Roldan in 2004, Guda Lab’s work can be enjoyed at its best in Shaa, the one-and-only oxygen bar in Bogota. Last year they opened a store in which you can find a vast range of products including chairs, sofas, entertainment furniture and accessories. [see also Dibo]

Joanna Newsom creates achingly beautiful harp music over which her pixie voice and medieval lyrics soar in a wave of poetic ambiguity. There’s tales of monkeys and bears and sawdust and diamonds and girls called Emily. And while I have absolutely no idea what she’s singing about, I could listen to it for hours. [see also Jen Cloher]

pH suggests balance, the optimum level for the healthy cleansing of skin. In the same manner, fashion label pH by phillia incorporates that sense of purity in its creations. Monochromatic pastel colours, simple yet elegant cuts and Japanese embellishing mash together to form highly-wearable vintage offerings. [see also Bird]

My good friend Seshan M has a new musical project on the go and it’s a damn fine one too. Tiptronik create a mish-mash of electro beats, static coated synth lines and bass grooves. It’s going to ruffle a few ears in the dance world, and we can say we were there when it was just a listen on a MySpace page. [paintings by Elin Neumann]

It’s good to hear that Aussie singer/songwriter Lenka Kripac is kicking around Los Angeles doing interesting things with interesting people. Her ‘breathy, strangely haunting Bjork-style voice’ [Rolling Stone 2004] has been featured in Sydney band Decoder Ring for the past few years on the critically acclaimed albums Fractions and Somersault and now she’s branching out to create atmospheric pop songs as a solo artist. One of her songs - Follow - has been placed in Courtney Cox’s new show Dirt. Check out her MySpace page and catch her debut solo show in Los Angeles at Tangier, Los Feliz, on Feb 9.
Listen to an excerpt of her new song Let Me Bite now.

Hotel Quadrifolio [which literally means a four-leaf clover … yes the lucky, rare one] is located inside the walled city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia - the upcoming hot destination in the tropic. The city is currently hosting the culture-fest Bill Clinton called ‘the Woodstock of the mind’, Hay Festival, which features conversations with and performances by writers, comedians, film-makers and musicians such as Bob Geldof. The hotel itself is small but luxurious, standing in the original building of a mid XVII century restored Spanish Colonial residence and offering hi-tech privileges such as high speed wireless and LAN Internet access, ultra slim CD tuner sound system with iPod docking capability, and a 42″ Plasma screen - all in what is a relatively antique space. The price per night for a couple is around US$260 and the whole experience is more than worth it. [see also 104 Art Suites]

If the rumblings in the fashion underground about Athens-born designer Romina Karamanea are to be believed, she will soon be the darling of Anna Wintour and her cronies. Dubbed the ‘goddess of intellectual clothing’, it is not hard to see why. Cut and proportion are the leading elements in Romina’s work, where every billow, silhouette and stitch has purpose and place. She combines sensual sophistication with mystery to construct clothes like no other. [see also Master/Slave]
