The Red Romance

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of musical ruin, New York band The Red Romance have burst forth from the scraps of the cultishly popular Ambulance LTD. But whereas Ambulance LTD created a dense wall of indie rock, The Red Romance produce catchy, jangly guitar pop – carved from the same piece of granite as The Strokes and with that same sense of familiarity that their music engenders. I’m a big fan, having heard their demos through their MySpace website, and have had one of their tracks – Like I Do – stuck on constant rotation on my mental iPod. Hmmm. Thank god I’m not paying them royalties for it. Anyway, they were touring America with The Killers when I was in New York and are absolutely destined for bigger and better things. As they say in the classics, watch this space.

Hey Zolton, good call on Red Romance. I was a fan of Ambulance and had no idea that the guys had reformed into this new outfit. They sound a bit like the Editors, another fave of mine.

Zolton said | 16 January, 2007

Yeah, they really have something cool going on. We’ll keep a watch on them and update again on their progress soon.

The Red Romance are great! I saw them with The Killers in Boston, MA, USA. They have great songs and put on a cool show, very NYC-band vibe! They keep saying they’re going to put out a record, what the hell’s taking them so long?…..

Saw Red Romance open for tonight for The Killers at the Sears Centre in Chicago. Hadn’t heard or heard of them before, but was pleasantly surprised. Definitely show promise, great songs, but could use some help whipping their stage look together.

I saw these guys in Toronto with the Killers, and hadn’t heard of them before. They are great! I loved their sound and bought their EP after the show. I can’t stop playing it and have spread the word of their myspace page to anyone who has similar musical tastes. I can wait to hear a full album :-)

“Black ink warlock” Justin Bartlett has done some of my favorite metal album covers of late, such as the one for Bohemian Grove’s Age of Retrogression and Pentemple’s self-titled record. His outsider-ish style reminds me a bit of the work of Rudimentary Peni frontman, Nick Blinko, but he has much more sophisticated sense of design and layout. Read more

In surf culture circles, the second half of 2009 belonged to Modern Collective. Six of the world’s most innovative surfers taking on world-class breaks suited to aerial surfing. This is no Endless Summer soul-search; it’s a film about the new generation of surfers creating a new style of surfing. Throwing ridiculous airs is hardly a new thing, but the stuff these guys are going for – and landing – has been blowing minds. Surf magazine execs scrambled for early viewings, and as they held clandestine meetings in darkened apartments around director Kai Neville’s MacBook Pro the opinions were unanimous; the game has been changed, for good. This is the biggest surf film release in years, possibly decades. Read more
