The Red Romance

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of musical ruin, New York band The Red Romance have burst forth from the scraps of the cultishly popular Ambulance LTD. But whereas Ambulance LTD created a dense wall of indie rock, The Red Romance produce catchy, jangly guitar pop - carved from the same piece of granite as The Strokes and with that same sense of familiarity that their music engenders. I’m a big fan, having heard their demos through their MySpace website, and have had one of their tracks - Like I Do - stuck on constant rotation on my mental iPod. Hmmm. Thank god I’m not paying them royalties for it. Anyway, they were touring America with The Killers when I was in New York and are absolutely destined for bigger and better things. As they say in the classics, watch this space.

Crazy chairs from the Campana brothers

Who said chairs had to be boring? Or practical? This range of chairs from designer brothers, Fernando and Humberto Campana, nicely blurs the line between form and functionality, art and science. Read more

Hey Zolton, good call on Red Romance. I was a fan of Ambulance and had no idea that the guys had reformed into this new outfit. They sound a bit like the Editors, another fave of mine.

Yeah, they really have something cool going on. We’ll keep a watch on them and update again on their progress soon.

The Red Romance are great! I saw them with The Killers in Boston, MA, USA. They have great songs and put on a cool show, very NYC-band vibe! They keep saying they’re going to put out a record, what the hell’s taking them so long?…..

Saw Red Romance open for tonight for The Killers at the Sears Centre in Chicago. Hadn’t heard or heard of them before, but was pleasantly surprised. Definitely show promise, great songs, but could use some help whipping their stage look together.

I saw these guys in Toronto with the Killers, and hadn’t heard of them before. They are great! I loved their sound and bought their EP after the show. I can’t stop playing it and have spread the word of their myspace page to anyone who has similar musical tastes. I can wait to hear a full album :-)

In the beautiful work of New York City-based illustrator, designer and typographer, Mario Hugo, finely rendered faces and figures intermingle with various abstract patterns and shapes to create some seriously refined, surreal, and mysterious work that’s all that, and then some.

Killola is three boys and one girl, making rock music out of Los Angeles, California. The band’s style of garage pop (often described as ‘Blondie for the 21st Century’) has received more than 1.5 million MySpace plays from over 80,000 friends, many of whom add the band’s ‘K))’ symbol to their screen names as a show of allegiance. The band recently self-booked its own UK tour — 12 shows in 12 days — and American Tour — 27 shows in 32 days. Oh, and their latest album is available for free download. Viva la independence!

Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. While the Belizean Islands are some of the most beautiful and tranquil in the world, Belize City is one of those uninspiring places that most people travel in and out of very quickly. However, if you do find yourself stranded there, as I did, the city does have one redeeming attraction. Approximately twenty kilometres west of the centre, you’ll find the Belize Zoo — which the founders call the ‘best little zoo in the world’. It relies on charitable donations and has gained huge respect for housing native Belizean wildlife, such as jaguars, howler monkeys, tapirs, ocelots and toucans, in natural, tropical surroundings. If you’re there on the first Friday in April, you can even join hundreds of visitors in celebrating the birthday of the zoo’s resident tapir, April. The zoo has an awesome rasta-vibe, and the hand-written information posts are guaranteed to make you giggle.

The WorldToilet blog

When I was living in China, a friend of mine had an idea to publish a guidebook about the country’s bathrooms because many expats spend the first few months living abroad going through unfortunate, awkward, and nightmarish experiences coping with sanitation issues, squat toilets, and curious locals trying to catch a glimpse of Western junk. WorldToilet.info is a hilarious but very useful resource for travelers wondering what to expect and how to behave in various exotic locals when nature calls.

Joe Sorren

We asked Arizona-based artist Joe Sorren what we would have been if he hadn’t been handed the most ridiculously generous serving of artistic talent: ‘Art historian and conservationalist. Or a botanist. Or I’d work with horses. It would be interesting to be behind the scenes in politics, at least for a while. Or maybe a studio musician, or invent games, or a … I would rather paint’. Ah, we agree.
