Melbourne’s St Kilda is one of those iconic places that attracts an eclectic bunch of people, many of whom liberally skirt the conventional parameters of life. The beachside community is renowned for its diversity – be it in the music and art that out of the pubs and studios or the cakes that tempt from the windows of the cafes. It’s a fascinating little part of Melbourne and its been captured for posterity in a new coffee table book by Australian photographers Elizabeth Clancy and Kylie-Rose Douglas. Same Place Different Face ‘uncovers the character and edginess of a place that holds a magnetic attraction to locals and visitors, louts and luminaries. To some, St Kilda is fish and chips as the sun sets over the pier, Acland Street cake binges, Luna Park, Junction Oval and hot sand in summer. To others, it’s 4am stumps, big sounds from the Prince Band Room, queuing on The Espy steps, street workers, bar brawls and big breakfasts. Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. I love the brashness of this ongoing series, Poupée Barbie, by French artist Jocelyn Grivaud, created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the doll that (most) every girl grew up with. Grivaud has pulled stills from iconic movies, paintings and photos, casting Barbie as the star in a statement about her seemingly timeless relevance. Read more

We love sex in art. No, not in a smutty Benny Hill kinda way, but rather the way in which Australian-based website Sex In Art takes a healthy peek at all things arty and well … sexual. There’s some beautiful illustration work up there and some evocative photography. Heck, I’m getting a little hot under the collar just writing about it. While most of the work they feature is work friendly, some of it isn’t. Still, it’s worth more than a casual glance, like this painting by Chinese artist, Guan Zeju.
I’ve just come across the music of Minneapolis band Cloud Cult, and their song Chemicals Collide in particular. Their sound is a mix of scratchy acoustic guitar riffs mixed in with staccato beats and airy harmonies, all infused with a beautiful sense of lyrical melancholy. Read more
Heavily influenced by music and film, the design team at Conquer Gear showcases their tees not as clothes, but indubitably as limited edition art pieces. That said, I wonder what film or music piece inspired Mr. Owl picture t shirt [below]? Led Zeppelin came to mind, but then so did Joni Mitchell!.
