Having graduated from the University of Brighton with a BA Hons in Illustration, Vicki Scott has completed designs for Paperchase as well as exhibiting at events such as the Affordable Arts Fair in Battersea and being featured in The Times. Of her work she says: ‘It is fashion based, often with a 1920’s feel, although influences range from food, animals, humour, found images and often just pure fantasy. All my pieces have a handmade aesthetic by using a variety of materials including coloured card, paint and fabric. To maintain a certain ambiguity over the characters identities, I often represents them as silhouettes. I like my work to remain uplifting and, although it sounds cheesy, I like the idea that my picture has brightened up someone’s day’. [see also Debbie Hill]

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! We love sex in art. No, not in a smutty Benny Hill kinda way, but rather the way in which Australian-based website Sex In Art takes a healthy peek at all things arty and well … sexual. There’s some beautiful illustration work up there and some evocative photography. Heck, I’m getting a little hot under the collar just writing about it. While most of the work they feature is work friendly, some of it isn’t. Still, it’s worth more than a casual glance, like this painting by Chinese artist, Guan Zeju.
Back in the day, New Zealand pop absurdists, Split Enz were the finest damn Australasian band around. This track, I Walk Away, off their final album — Spellbound — is their ultimate moment: a hefty dose of pure melodic majestry, wrapped around the aching lyrics and quirky arrangements of genius frontman, Neil Finn.
Originally hailing from Kendal, Cumbria and now based in Leeds, the Wild Beasts foursome are the next hopefuls for Domino Records, who sent the group out to Sweden to record their first album, Limbo, Panto, released on June the 16th. The new single — The Devil’s Crayon — shimmers in wide-screen around a sense of location, melody and wonder at the scale of things. Indeed, it sounds like the theme song to a new kind of very English road movie.
