Nat Leichti interviews Mia Timpano — creator, editor and shameless geek behind Melbourne-based bi-monthly magazine, Nerds Gone Wild! Where did the idea come from? ‘I created the magazine to satisfy a very real, very deep need in me to discuss the crap that I love. I love bad TV, I love bad movies, I love bad blogs and I love Google-stalking people. And I wanted to discuss those things, nerd-to-nerd, with readers that understood them. So I gathered together the best nerds I knew from around the world and asked them to kindly go wild in under four thousand words. The result: a new kind of journalism, fuelled by throbbing nerd passion’. Two issues down the track, how has the reaction been? ‘Love. Sweet nerd love. What people don’t realise is that there is a vast, pulsing seam of nerds out there. Take my peer group. We are all walking nerds. Are nerds the new cool? ‘Real nerds will never be cool. And that’s why they’re cool’.
