Here’s some more from the inteview with Depeche Mode members Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher and Dave Gahan. Let’s just go back to the beginning. With those first few singles, the important thing was that you had Daniel Miller and you had Mute, and whatever door you wanted to open he let you, which is very unusual. Were you aware at the time of just how good that deal was? MG: ‘I’ve always said that I think we were very lucky. I think some sort of gut instinct made us choose Mute and go with Daniel. He just had a good aura about him, we trusted him, and the whole thing just worked out so well. It was originally just a one-off single deal that worked very well and then we got to really like Daniel and the freedom that he gives us is just incredible. We’ve never ever had any record company pressure to do anything’. AF: ‘It’s an important point really being with Mute records because they have really made sure that our career has developed in a nice slow way and we haven’t been overdone too early on. And there’s very few bands that are actually allowed to develop in a nice slow way’. Where do you think Depeche Mode fit in musically in 2006? DG: ‘We don’t fit in and we never have and I’ve come to actually really embrace that. There is no-one like Depeche Mode, you know, the way we work, everything, like the way we do things. It’s kind of a unique experience and you have to kind of enjoy it, you know, and sort of throw yourself into it, because it is really different and that’s one of I think the real strengths of Depeche Mode’.

Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.
Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

The uber-hip French producer M83 has compiled a Secret Playlist for us in which he props Brian Eno, Julee Cruise, and Tears For Fears’ Head Over Heels: ‘This song was the biggest influence for my new album. I love this track by London based rock group, Scanners, which is off their latest album, Submarine. Having toured with acts such as The Horrors, The Wedding Present, The Charlatans, Electric Six, and Juliette & The Licks, Scanners could well blow up in 2010. Figuratively speaking, not literally. No, that wouldn’t be fun.
