Canadian visual artist, Marian Bantjes. takes her inspiration from a wide variety of sources: ‘Most of the usual suspects such as C14th–18th calligraphy, illuminated manuscripts, islamic art, art nouveau, the Arts and Crafts movement, typography, textiles from around the world, old lace, Baroque, Rococco or Gothic anything, psychedelia, grafitti, Victoriana, money, engraving, Persian carpets … the list goes on. Surprisingly, I’m not a big fan of Celtic knotwork or M.C. Escher. Less obviously, but just as important, are my interests in Modernist architecture and design, Swiss typography, contemporary art, photography, sculpture, fashion, writing and any number of things that might pass my way randomly at any point in time’. The press surrounding the show has boosted her profile and her new collection featuring all the Upper East Side trimmings is greatly anticipated.
The highly polished electronic sound of Minneapolis band UltraChorus falls somewhere between Hot Chip and Phoenix, bringing a cut and paste indie rock aesthetic to late nineties Hip-Hop and R&B.
