Sydney photographer, Amanda Gilligan, takes brilliant live shots that make you feel as though you’re right there in the front row, being drowned in a bucket of sweat and copping a backful of shoves from the frenetic punters behind — as these shots of Brisbane band The Grates and, ummm, Fiest’s legs attest. Of her work she says: ‘When I’m old and deaf from standing next to speakers for too many years, at least I’ll have the photos to look back on. I like details. I try and capture that when I shoot rockstars. Taking just one good shot out of 100 makes me giddy’. [see also Daniel Boud]

He may have played Kipland Ronald Dynamite (Kip) in Napoleon Dynamite, but Californian photographer Aaron Ruell is much more comfortable behind the camera. We interviewed him recently: You’re an actor, filmmaker, and photographer. Is there a continuous theme or tone in your work across these mediums? ‘I think there is a connection between my photography and what I do in film as a director. I notice a similar tone between the two. I’m not sure that I set out for consistency between the two, it just happens. I still have issues with calling myself an “actor”. I’ve only done two films, and it’s not something that I’m out there actively pursuing. Those projects just happen to find me, so I can’t say that there’s a connection there’.
‘One pig was hurt while making this lovely image of a pig’, reads the caption below Catherine Konopleva’s new art piece dedicated to the cruel butchery of animals. Ironically titled ‘Lovely’, the collage utilizes pig fat, meat and muscle to shed light on pork activism.
Improv Everywhere strikes again with a spontaneous musical in a Los Angeles mall. Wireless microphones hooked up to the mall’s PA system ensured the feeding masses didn’t slip into Cinnabon-induced comas until after the show was over.
