Jennifer Merrill

San Francisco-based artist, Jennifer Merrill, suggests that her work offers ‘subtle inquiries into the nature of scientific visual language, and quirky, funny diagrams, imbued with the deceptive promise of imparting factual information. The pared-down imagery evokes the objective authority of scientific illustration. Yet each painting delivers only enough information to vaguely illustrate concepts of instinct, unseen mental and emotional processes, and overt and veiled communication between people. The imagery negotiates a space between the rational and irrational, between the humorous and the serious, and between science and emotion’. [see also Jonah Cacioppe]

Vibrant, colourful photos of New York in 1971

We love the voyeuristic thrill of these photos by Gentle Giant that ran on the Retronaut website and reveal a vibrant, thriving, bustling New York in 1971 that looks vaguely similar to the New York that I experienced between 2006 and 2011. Minus the beehive hairdoes, flares, and the big red phone booths, of course. Read more

New Banksy artwork critiques London Olympics, perhaps

That elusive street art urchin (and we mean that in the nicest possible way), Banksy, has struck again in London, with a new artwork mysteriously appearing on the wall of a shop on Whymark Avenue, Turnpike Lane. As is to be expected, the street art sends a subtle social message, though so subtle in this case that Banksy-philes are torn over whether it is criticising the upcoming Olympics, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee or last summer’s riots. Instagram Socialmatic Camera

It had to happen sooner or later. Italian-based ADR Studio have created a prototype for the world’s first Instagram photo camera, armed with a duffle bag worth of features, including 16 GB mass storage; Wifi and Bluetooth; an Internal printer to make your Instagram photos real; and paper cartridge with Instagram Paper Sheets. Genius! Well, at least, we think so. They’re currently looking for Indiegogo funding to make it all happen on a far bigger scale. Read more

Just over a year ago, I decided to draw one illustration a day and post it online for a year. I did it initially to practice and to develop. I completed the project last month and I’m really proud of myself for achieving what I had hoped. I feel like an illustrator now. It goes to show what can be done with a bit of focus and an Internet connection. Read more

An amazing archive of brilliant photography and great write ups, and veering heavily towards motorcycle and gang culture photography, the creative whirlwind behind the Selvedge Yard blog groups together in his archive a collective spirit of musicians, artists, writers and rebel rousers that I find so inspiring and interesting. Monarch are an incredibly grim, lumbering doom metal band from Basque country in France. Frontwoman Emilie Bresson is one of those rare female singers in metal that’s at once fierce and raspy, yet identifiably female, creating a haunting, menacing sound that can stand up against the most ragingly macho bands out there.

This awesome one-of-kind jewelry by Margaux Lange plays with the idea of using old Barbie doll parts by turning them into lovely creative jewelry. It now makes me wish I didn’t gave my dolls away. Read more
