Sydney-based artist Lang Leav uses pastels and pixels to weave the enchanting world of Akina. After leaving art college, Leav worked as a freelancer for various creative agencies fulfilling roles in textiles, illustration, packaging and product design. Akina is her creative playground, combining her love of art, fashion and storytelling. [see also Chris Buzelli]

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Yeah, I see the Ryden touch in Lang’s work. But no sign of raw meat anywhere! Incidentally she has just been awarded a grant to do some work over in Japan. Very exciting news for this talented Aussie illustrator.

We touched in with her to see how she found the experience of being over there: ‘we visited some really modern art galleries, which seemed to be on par with with the best galleries in New York City’.

Don’t be afraid of the word retro. It has haunted us all from time to time, but one group that has embraced it with open arms is UK duo, La Roux. Their music is synth pop in the vein of Calvin Harris, Human League, The Eurythmics, and The Knife. There are quite a few of these young and ambitious pop starlets on the scene including Goldielocks. But La Roux takes the cake. Literally. I’m obsessed with their song In For the Kill and have a feeling summer will take it and make it a hit.
