Debbie Hill

UK illustrator Debbie Hill recently graduated with a first-class degree in graphic communication. Her work is ‘quite process driven. I like to experiment with using a range of techniques and materials. I often try and find an illustrative process for each brief that really reflects the subject matter. For example, I used paper as my sole material to create an animation about origami and have created imagery for a book about button phobia using actual buttons and embroidery on fabric’. Her piece – ‘Origami’ – has been selected for a student illustrator prize in the 2006 V&A Illustration Awards. [see also Janey]

Nice doodle. That's a photorealistic line drawing of a cat riding a bicycle, right? You should sign up for our free weekly newsletter.

This website hosts a nice collection of quirky, sometimes mind-boggling, sculptures from around the world. There’s a certain Dali-esque feel to a lot of them – those surreal, dreamy hallucinations turned into a warped reality. I’ve always been a sucker for art that really catches you out for a few seconds, and these certainly do that.

Here’s another commercial building, and no doubt a nice one too. But just another commercial building. Yet there is something different here and it’s in the materials used. The cladding is a fibre-reinforced polymer, or a FRP, and has a finish similar to that of a car. Read more

Austin band The Low Lows are one of my most prized finds of the year so far. It’s introspective music — staggered harmonies delivered by a distant, agonised voice that filters through a wall of tranquil guitar distortion and measured drumming. Every instrument carries a powerful emotion, sometimes keeping their distance from one another, floating up and around the airwaves, and other times colliding and crashing back to earth.
