Yuko Shimizu
By her own admission, Yuko Shimizu – ‘illustrator, educator, and not so prolific at this moment fine artist – has been drawing ever since she could hold a crayon, but took a long time to actually become a professional artist’. She now works out of Shy Studio in midtown Manhattan, where she is ‘secretly dreaming of getting a studio-parrot one day (or a dog, or a polar bear)’. [see also Marcos Chin]

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV
The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.
Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

Really digging the grotesque, zombie-like sculptures and images of Chicago-based artist Rachel Niffeneggar. The materiality of Niffeneggar’s work is as vital to the interpretation of each piece as the aggregate images, bringing up high-concept ideas that transcend mere horror movie worship.
I can’t remember when or why I stumbled upon the work of UK-based photographer, Melinda Gibson, but I’m glad I did. There’s a real intimacy in her portrayal of space, captured between the silhouette of humans.
I don’t get Flight of The Concords. I just don’t find it funny. I also don’t get most comedy these days. It’s so derivative and clichéd. Everyone wants the same laughs. If you come to Berlin, then I recommend this little shop, Dederon Design, specializing in stuff manufactured in, or inspired by, the former GDR (East Germany). Everything from ice cream cups to LP racks and toys. The woman running the shop even designs bags in some weird GDR-invented plastic material.
Springfield Punx is a great blog that features renderings of what your favorite comic book, cartoon, and movie characters (and a few late-night talk-show hosts thrown in for good measure) would look like as characters on the Simpsons.
