Is Not A Party
Our friends over at the Melbourne-based street poster publication, Is Not Magazine – our favourite wrap of pop culture goodness – are doing a Sydney launch party this Thursday night at 34B, Oxford Street, Darlinghurst. These talented young guys and gals are doing something really creative and unique in this country and we doff our hats to em’ whilst encouraging all you Sydneysiders to rock up to what will most certainly be a very happening party. How could it not be? Their motto is that they’ve been ‘funded entirely by partying since April 2005′. The line-up includes bands Pomomofo, Hot Little Hands (Melbourne), and Plug-in City (Melbourne), plus DJ Manchild and various ‘stick your hands in the air’ hi-jinx. We’ve got two double passes to give away to random Lost At E Minor subscribers who leave a comment under this post saying why you really, really want one. [see also Riot magazine]

Maths explains the origin of superhero characters

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV
The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.
Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

I bought my first IsNotMag at TINA(this is not art festival), cradled it back to sydney and put in my hallway. You could see it from the front door and then everyone who walked past would give my house +10 for design cred.

Hey muchachos,
So glad you guys are coming! Or at least, you like the idea of coming. We can’t wait! I am worried about my Surry Hills posing skills, any advice would be very welcome. Please come and say hi at party, I will be the tall one who is obviously not from Surry Hills.

This soiree would solve a small dilema I’m having tomorrow night. I live in Newtown; He lives in Bronte. We’re always trying to meet somewhere in the middle and you don’t get any more middle than 34B.
Please can we come and join in the shenanigans???

They say you can’t reinvent the wheel, but designer Ron Arad has done just that with his Two Nuns Bicycle. Rather than the traditional spokes and tires, this bike moves along on mandalas of bolted steel.

Oh, ok, so now I’ve seen it all. Or perhaps, in this case, I’m not seeing enough. Japanese game shows are so much fun. Seriously.
I recently passed through Detroit and saw the Heidelberg Project, an amazing street installation by Tyree Guyton. It felt like walking through a ghost town that had been ravished by art zombies, hauntingly beautiful and particularly sad on the rainy day I was there. Read more

When you first hear William Elliot Whitmore’s voice, it’s hard to believe he isn’t a grizzled old man. The baritone-voiced one-man-band does rousing bar room ballads on the banjo and guitar that are sure to send shivers down your spine. On closer listen, Whitmore’s voice does seem slightly affected. But like Tom Waits before him, his voice is likely to age like a good scotch.
