Events / Is Not A Party
Our friends over at the Melbourne-based street poster publication, Is Not Magazine - our favourite wrap of pop culture goodness - are doing a Sydney launch party this Thursday night at 34B, Oxford Street, Darlinghurst. These talented young guys and gals are doing something really creative and unique in this country and we doff our hats to em’ whilst encouraging all you Sydneysiders to rock up to what will most certainly be a very happening party. How could it not be? Their motto is that they’ve been ‘funded entirely by partying since April 2005′. The line-up includes bands Pomomofo, Hot Little Hands (Melbourne), and Plug-in City (Melbourne), plus DJ Manchild and various ’stick your hands in the air’ hi-jinx. We’ve got two double passes to give away to random Lost At E Minor subscribers who leave a comment under this post saying why you really, really want one. [see also Riot magazine]

I love the sense of space and subtle introspection that seeps through Gregory Euclide’s artwork. His says of his latest series, ‘my work explores the way we experience nature and how this is tied to the cultural practice of constructing landscapes as idealized images. When we are in nature we experience the world through all of our senses in a dynamic way, but at the same time we are framing what we see through the cultural expectations we have absorbed through representational systems such as landscape painting, wildlife documentary, and travel guides. It is impossible, then, to have a true, non-mediated experience of nature even though we may long for it. My work explores the contradictions between the projection of idealized, picturesque views of landscape and our desire to have an authentic experience in nature’. Read more

I bought my first IsNotMag at TINA(this is not art festival), cradled it back to sydney and put in my hallway. You could see it from the front door and then everyone who walked past would give my house +10 for design cred.

Hey muchachos,
So glad you guys are coming! Or at least, you like the idea of coming. We can’t wait! I am worried about my Surry Hills posing skills, any advice would be very welcome. Please come and say hi at party, I will be the tall one who is obviously not from Surry Hills.

This soiree would solve a small dilema I’m having tomorrow night. I live in Newtown; He lives in Bronte. We’re always trying to meet somewhere in the middle and you don’t get any more middle than 34B.
Please can we come and join in the shenanigans???

History is the story of the winners, and western dominated culture recounts few triumphs from the east. Mongol is an effort to correct this balance, and the eastern influence is evident in much more than just the storyline. It is more like a fairy tale or legend handed down through generations, than based on fact, with mythical elements playing a major part, and the character’s motivations remaining simple. Read more

This café, cookie shop, ice cream place in Cobble Hill Brooklyn is all about flavor, aroma and family. Their cookies and ice cream are absolutely to-die-for, and the place is so well-designed, painted in vintage colors with old family pictures printed on the walls, that you’ll want to indulge yourself for more than just a few minutes. Try their Whoopies and Lucia cookies. They’re my favourite.

A master of juxtaposition, Canadian photographer Liz Wolfe has updated her site with her newest series which focuses on characters and confection. The photos are never what they first seem, revealing something a little more macabre on closer inspection: a meat tree, a diseased dear, a melting icy pole dripping blood. It’s all presented in hyper-real candy colours.
The pre-revolution artwork of Xiaoqing Ding
New York-based artist Xiaoqing Ding’s work draws from traditional Sung Dynasty scroll paintings as well as from more recent forms, her figures looking as much like the cherubic babies in festive Chinese New Year art (known as Nian Hua) as they do the sultry flappers in cigarette ads in 1930s Shanghai. Her images have an ethereal and slyly erotic quality, referencing Chinese mythology, pre-revolution film, and subtly personal narratives. Read more
