Diggin’ your scene

Curse the person that invented karaoke. Subjecting yourself to immense ridicule whilst singing a terrible version of a terrible song just isn’t my idea of a good time. But then again, I missed the whole point of Tetris too, so perhaps I’m just an alien. Or a wowser. Or that kid that never shared. Whatever. I just don’t get it. Mind you, I do remember an occasion during those misspent years of the late 1990s when I found myself succumbing to the jeers of peer group pressure to deliver a heartfelt version of the Joe Cocker song, ‘The Lift Is Up Where We Belong’. Swaying gently from side to side, eyes closed to accentuate the moment, you could’ve heard a pin drop as every off-key note rebounded with alarming grandeur off the alcohol numbed faces of my co-workers. Yet as the last note faded to obscurity, it was greeted by absolute silence – no laughter, no whistles. Just…nothing, followed by a somewhat disconcerting murmur as I made my way back to my chair. Yup, it’s one thing to make an ass of yourself in front of complete strangers, another in front of those with whom you share 9-5 breathing space. Never again, I vowed. And never again I have remained. Which is not to say I haven’t visited that hallowed room, it’s just that these days it’s only to heckle. And let me tell you, that’s a damn sight more fun anyway. Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV

The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend

Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

Stewy does a range of stencils of indigenous British animals and the odd musical characters in and around a specific area of North London. I’ve seen his work develop from black and white to multiple colour and small to large scale. It started with cats and dogs, and he recently did a full-scale horse. I love walking around town and seeing a great page in a magazine without paying for it. Read more

This clip had such an impact on me when it first came out, back in the day. There’s just something so poignant about the idea that some people you pass on the street everyday have a little bit more insight into their world — our world — than we could ever imagine. It’s beautiful and confronting, and it’s all set to the most wonderfully evocative music.

These fascinating mosaics of twenty-first century human habitation are proof that planned housing isn’t always dull and distasteful, for the bird’s-eye photographer at least. What may be endless rows of generic streets and blocks at ground level suddenly become giant patchwork quilts from the air, perhaps in a weird way proving that there is more to life than what meets the pedestrian’s eye.
