Dear Twinkle Twinkle, I sit here at work typing away with my head buzzing like an ornate spinning top from the first potent hit of morning caffeine. Ah, caffeine, the sweet elixir of life. For some a treasured giver of energy and charisma. For others a mushy collection of brown soot just asking to be flushed. Anyway, I’m sitting here in a little discomfort — taking five minutes out from my busy work day to write an almighty poem. That’s right, one that the Greek philosophers would be envious of. One that Pamela Anderson would trade both her boobs in for. One that Paris Hilton would look at, laugh at, and then come back later and steal. But first I must feel inspired. Be made to feel, well, unique. So without further ado I request that you take just two minutes out of your day to send me the following email. I have simplified things a little by writing it for you. So merely copy and paste then sit back and enjoy the poetic goodness to follow. ‘You are more handsome than George Clooney, Johnny Depp and that fat kid out of Hey Dad. You have an amazing knowledge of things. And yes, it’s true, just as you suspected, Lee Harvey Oswald did not act alone’. Ah … Thankyou. That’s just what I needed to hear. [illustration by Zack Paul]

Formerly the lead singer of the Stones Roses - an eclectically talented group that never quite reached full potential - he has since carved out a successful solo career, moving well beyond the poppy melodrama of Fools Gold and into a more left-field sonic terrain. Back in the day, New Zealand pop absurdists, Split Enz were the finest damn Australasian band around. This track, I Walk Away, off their final album — Spellbound — is their ultimate moment: a hefty dose of pure melodic majestry, wrapped around the aching lyrics and quirky arrangements of genius frontman, Neil Finn.

When I first moved to London and didn’t know a soul, I joined up with the British Film Institute [BFI] and started going to the talks they put on. When I went to see Gene Wilder speak, all the know-alls in the audience kept asking questions, not to find out anything, but just to show off to the room how much they knew about film making. He got annoyed. Genius boy genius.

Doug Kanter at Beijing’s Midi Music Festival
The Midi Music Festival is sorta like the SXSW of Beijing, where bands from all over the country gather each year to rock out. Beijing-based photojournalist Doug Kanter did a series of portraits of concert-goers at Midi last year that is pretty fun. Read more
The Howling Bells on their big Bell Hit
The first time I saw Howling Bells play was a blustery Sydney evening a few years back when I’d gotten the word from singer Juanita Stein’s brother — Ari — that an ‘event’ was going down and I was to do whatever it took to get in to see it. Tired and feeling unsociable, I scrubbed up nonetheless and made my way down a winding Oxford Street to a small club just before the red light district of Darlingurst. Read more
The Telegraph just posted some photos of the migration of golden rays (also known as cownose rays) off the coast of Mexico. It’s guaranteed to restore your sense of wonder at the world.
Brooklyn Illustrator Sam Friedman has the most graceful line quality. In whatever form it takes, from abstract line to bold cursive, it’s this beautiful line quality that is clearly the embodiment of his work. In Friedman’s work, this line is often built up in dense, colorful layers to create the most intense abstract fields, guaranteed make your eyes spin. Punctuated with bold shapes and imagery, with a distinct graffiti influence, Freidman makes it pretty clear that the boundaries for his technique are endless. Read more
Neal Murren likes hanging out in forests — deep, dark forests — from which dark artworks featuring clowns, frogs, marionettes, skeletons, Courtney Love fairies, and the requisite giant toadstools weave together in penciled delight. It’s the kind of work you’d pore over, nose-to-page, in a crack of sunlight. Read more

congrats (again) on ‘Lost At E Minor’…. i’ve been a subscriber since may 2005 and out of the dozens of various newsletters, zines, blogs etc i subscribe to, yours continues to insist on being absorbed and explored. the weekly missive is even more valuable after my recent move from surry hills to thursday island (long story)! the changes you’ve put in place and the way you’ve successfully collided your concept with the art and technology is brilliant. don’t stop.
