So I’ve come to the rather disheartening conclusion that Dolly Parton — that iconic symbol for all things, erm, busty — is a genius. That’s right. A bonafide member of a club which counts Steven Hawkins, Paul McCartney and Ali G as directors. How else can you account for the sublime turn of phrase in her hit single ‘9 to 5′? For the creation of Dollyworld and all the goodness that it harboured? For the inherent perkiness that seems to seep from every glistening pore of her airbrushed veneer? Yes, Dolly Parton, is one of a kind. Though exactly why I’m thinking of her right now is beyond me. Maybe it was something I ate. [photos by Anne Michaux]

Ahh… I must agree with your observations of Dolly Parton. But her genius is endless. I have always been amazed by her ability to play a guitar with fingernails that are six inches long. And I have seen her do it on TV. Now that is skill. I’ll also never forget the first Dolly Parton tape (yes tape) my mum bought when I was a kid. ‘Dolly Parton’s Greatest Hits’. And then my mum’s fury when my brother graffitied the cover with liquid paper changing the H to a T.

Redwood artist Ken Keirns has a thing for monkeys. That much is obvious enough. His site is crawling with them, in his toys, illustrations, and paintings. By his own admission, he ‘likes painting women and monkeys, with a sense of humor’. And so he does. Very, very well.
Wow! This song — More Childish Than In A Long Time — from Swedish teenage twins Taxi Taxi! just burst into my headphones like the first welcome glare of a mid-morning sunshine, stinging my ears wickedly with its coarse, repetitive beauty. The forlorn, introspective lyrics and melody tease and shimmer, sending a fleeting and not-so-subtle tap on the shoulder to hit repeat, repeat, and soak it all up again.
Finnish illustrator Rikka Sormunen’s sultry figures are simply stunning in their ability to convey a powerful sense of mystery and dense ambiance. I simply can’t get enough of them. Read more
This isn’t an outdoor art installation, but it is still somewhat curated. Or maybe hoarded is a better description. Somewhere in the inner western suburb of Sydney’s Summer Hill, there is a brightly coloured collection of garden gnomes on display. The owner of the home is yet to be seen, but there are hundreds of gnomes, side by side, all with equally dopey expressions on their faces and accompanied by a second fixation: caterpillar soft toys.
