I’m really into the work of Keith Andrew Shore – or KAS to his friends and family. He has a wicked sense of drama and a strange infatuation with ape-like creatures. Freud would have a field day. Or perhaps it’s just a case of capturing and then releasing the inner-best that lurks deep in us all. In some, perhaps, more so than others. Whatever. It’s all very cool.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. We asked them about their favourite music and they started with The Smiths song, Ask [listen below] ‘I saw them playing live on Italian TV. If I were to ask any of my illustrator friends who their favorite artists are, chances are almost all of them would list Raymond Pettibon as one of them. His work is beautiful, using such confident brush strokes.
Fresh fruit? Yes please! Never mind that I had just finished a cottage pie as big as my face. I was going to have a punnet of those raspberries. I couldn’t help myself. Really. They were just sitting so pretty alongside the luscious apples and pears lining the rickety stalls of London’s Soho Fruit Markets, I just couldn’t restrain myself. Says Yuko Shimizu on the artwork of legendary Japanese illustrator Katsushika Hokusai: ‘I was just at Kinokuniya Bookstore [a Japanese book store at Rockefeller Center in New York] a few days ago and bought The Complete Hokusai-Manga Sketchbooks [published by Shogakukan]. It was $150, but worth every penny with its mind-blowing works of art by Katsushika Hokusai from cover to cover’

[...] Those in Sydney should pop along to the Kirk Gallery in Surry Hills tonight for the burlesque party to end all burlesque parties. Called Dance Your Panties Off, the night will feature a ‘dazzling concoction of ethereal flyers, aerial artists, harp players and bizarre circus acts’ amongst other burlesque-styled oddities. Sounds like fun. It all kicks off at 8pm. Btw, the feature artist is Sam Smith, a young illustrator working out of the Gold Coast, Queensland.
