Zoe Sernack
For those who haven’t yet noticed, we’re soft launching our new website, and with it, we’re adopted a new email newsletter design. It’s all focused on interaction – so we encourage you to leave a comment, rate our content and send it on to your friends. On to other stuff… Sydney-based artist Zoe Sernack has recently opened the Canvas Gallery in the creative enclave of Buckingham Street, Surry Hills and has just announced details for the first exhibition to open there on July 19th. Called Ritual Observation, it features the work of James Alley, a talented young Australian artist who has done some creative work for the Billabong brand amongst others. Of her own art, Sernack says: ‘I find inspiration in everything around me. The graffiti that I walk past everyday, the faces that I talk to and the colours that I see. At times I find myself recreating what I hear in music, especially jazz. I love the unconfined way in which jazz musicians approach a song. In the same way I try not to restrict myself when approaching a fresh canvas so I am able to sustain the feeling of excitement and exploration through improvisation’. She’s only just graduated from university, but already has the Jerwood Photography Award 2008 under her belt and a spot in the prestigious UK Portfolio Magazine. Last night, I caught Pagan Fest at B.B. Kings in NYC. I missed the band that I was the most excited to see, T˘r, but Turisas and Ensiferum more than made up for it. Americans have been pretty late to warm up to folk and Viking metal, and bands of this sort almost never tour the States, so it was gratifying to see that the show was sold out, and that the crowd was so exuberant. The indie, electronic pop duo Plastic Operator paired up whilst studying audio production at London’s Westminster University. In 2004, they released their first three track EP. Their music reminds me of bands like The Fashion, Crystal Castles and Cut Copy.
