Haircuts! We all gotta get one someday. But seriously, the recent crop I’ve seen around the streets of Sydney have completely shattered my faith in the very fabric of our society — a society that allows, no, encourages, mullets to become the look of the moment. Not that there’s anything wrong with them of course. It’s just that Billy Ray Cyrus is still out there — somehow, somewhere — and the great man is probably still sporting a whopper of a do. I would suggest to any aspiring fashionista that — to paraphrase Groucho Marx — you really wouldn’t want to be a member of any club of which he is the founder, style guru and president. Ah, yes. Bring back the good ol’ days of short back and sides and crew cuts I say. Or, as Abe Simpson (of The Simpsons notoriety) so eloquently put it: ‘Look at Namath’s sideburns! He looks like a damn girl. Look at Johnny Unitas! Now there’s a haircut you could set your watch by’. Wise words indeed.

New York-based Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu has been featured on Lost At E Minor several times over the past couple of years. I love the sense of drama her work conveys, the apparent colour clashes that somehow gel despite pre-existing rules about their compatibility. We checked in with her to see what she’s been up to of late: ‘I just came back from a week in Georgian Bay in Canada. No internet, no cell phone reception for a week. It was fantastic! Now I am getting ready for a group show at Visual Arts Gallery in New York that opens in September. I am creating two new 40” x 60” drawings. I’m also slowly refurbishing my website here and there’. With the recent financial qualms, a moment of reflection takes over as we begin to wonder how we all became so out of touch with reality. Somehow Luxury lost its way and mistook itself for decadence, joining the Bling-Bling parade and gravitating towards the streets of self-indulgence. The worst mullet I’ve ever seen was on a girl. :\
