Haircuts! We all gotta get one someday. But seriously, the recent crop I’ve seen around the streets of Sydney have completely shattered my faith in the very fabric of our society — a society that allows, no, encourages, mullets to become the look of the moment. Not that there’s anything wrong with them of course. It’s just that Billy Ray Cyrus is still out there — somehow, somewhere — and the great man is probably still sporting a whopper of a do. I would suggest to any aspiring fashionista that — to paraphrase Groucho Marx — you really wouldn’t want to be a member of any club of which he is the founder, style guru and president. Ah, yes. Bring back the good ol’ days of short back and sides and crew cuts I say. Or, as Abe Simpson (of The Simpsons notoriety) so eloquently put it: ‘Look at Namath’s sideburns! He looks like a damn girl. Look at Johnny Unitas! Now there’s a haircut you could set your watch by’. Wise words indeed.

When I first stumbled upon local label, MUSE by Good Mixer, in Bangkok, I knew I’d found something special. In an industry plagued by copycat designers struggling to find their own identity, you’ve got to admire the ones who have carved an original signature style. By taking unlikely inspiration from American football and mixing it with Eastern influences, the latest collection by designer Chaichon Savantrat plays masculine sportswear against exotic evening wear. Teaming structured shoulder silhouettes with free flowing fabrics, Savantrat uses a palette of black, white and red to showcase intricate embroidery. Sculptor Richard Stipl creates disturbing, gothic, vaguely religious tableaus using hyper-realistic, resin casted figures that quite often are engaged in some bizarre behavior, covered in blood, leaking gore, or otherwise frozen in some horrific pose.
