Get some sleep
Music meets art in an exhibition featuring eleven Australian artists who work in both the visual and audio realms. With works incorporating mixed media paintings, photography, drawing and silk-screens, the month long Art Groupie exhibit at Sydney’s gallery-nightclub venue, Melt, draws on the rich tradition of musicians and producers whose vision goes beyond sound. Each exhibiting artist has also contributed a track to the limited edition hand-packaged CD which will be for sale on the opening night. ‘Some of the featured artists have turned to visual art as a new creative deviation having worked as musicians for some time, whilst others were originally painters, photographers or graphic designers who discovered the freedom of music later in life. Without exception, all are unique and inventive, regardless of their desire to continue creating as audio-visualists, or giving in to the urge to pursue one over the other’.

Seldom has black humour been done so well. On the surface, this film about the everyday lives of some unusually mundane characters, sounds extraordinarily boring. But it is instead a cutting comment on the absurdity and drudgery of everyday life. The characters try to break out or change their lives without success, and the results are bleak and hilarious. The New York Times recently posted a selection of Mad Magazine fold-ins from the past 40 years of the magazine’s history. The feature allows you to actually fold the images to reveal the decoded message and picture.
A culmination of nearly four years of writing and recording, Omaha quintet, The Faint are preparing to release their fifth album, Fasciinatiion, on August 5 on the band’s own newly-formed label, blank.wav. Working without any time constraints, the songs went through many recorded incarnations before finding their final forms. The result is the best album in the band’s career, a record that is the purest culmination of The Faint’s brilliant musical instincts, ideas and aesthetic, with each member contributing equally to its creation.
Beautiful Kaos is a small boutique Sydney-based label, created by Paulo Brito. His collection is launching this Summer, with a range of boardies, singlets, tees and jackets. The entire range epitomizes Summer fun, my favourite time of year.
