The latest issue of the hard-copy publication that I edit, Riot magazine, is out now and features a whole stack of pop culture titbits including an interview with Merri Cyr, Jeff Buckley’s photographer, looking back at her association with him. Her photos are beautiful, capturing the essence of a performer who never quite knew when to stop. There’s also a good slice of Flameboy’s Nirvana comicGodspeed – looking at the early years of Kurt Cobain’s life. There’s a 3d clay and paint fashion spread, put together by Japanese artist, Kacchi; interviews with rock bands The Long Winters, My Latest Novel, White Rose Movement, and Five O’Clock Heroes; profiles on artist Marco Cibola, Melbourne’s Is Not Magazine, Japanese producer Susumu Yokota, furniture designer Pascal Anson, and a feature on the New York figurine and plush toy craze. It’s on sale throughout Australia, but if anyone’s interested elsewhere, shoot me an email and I can give you some more info.

Star Wars Uncut: a fully crowdsourced version of Episode IV

The project of creative technologist, Casey Pugh, this full length version of the George Lucas masterpiece was created from multiple 15 second segments recreated from the original movie and submitted by thousands of Star Wars fans, which were then spliced together by editor Aaron Valdez to form the final product. Genius, as both a commentary on contemporary pop culture trends (there are references to LEGO, stop motion, memes and the like) and on the power of tapping your audience for quality material.

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend

Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

Riot needs its own website. I went Googling it a while ago, and I couldn’t find any info online. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Lost At E Minor: Music, illustration, art, photography - from Australia and beyond » Is Not A Party said | 21 August, 2006

[...] Our friends over at the Melbourne-based street poster publication, Is Not Magazine, our favourite wrap of pop culture goodness this side of Bombay, are doing a Sydney launch party this Thursday night at 34B, Oxford Street, Darlinghurst. These talented young guys and gals are doing something really creative and unique in this country and we doff our hats to em’ whilst encouraging all you Sydneysiders to rock up to what will most certainly be a very happening party. How could it not be? Their motto is that they’ve been ‘funded entirely by partying since April 2005′. The line-up includes bands Pomomofo, Hot Little Hands (Melbourne), and Plug-in City (Melbourne), plus DJ Manchild and various ’stick your hands in the air’ hi-jinx. We’ve got two double passes to give away to random Lost At E Minor subscribers who leave a comment under this post saying why you really, really want one. [see also Riot magazine] [...]

Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to be able to sing like Neil Finn. His voice rasps with all the sincerity and integrity of a thousand heartfelt melodies. Heck, I’d probably trade my prized collection of Archie comics for just the chorus on this song. Driving Me Mad? You betcha(dupa). This man is a treasure. Bow low indeed.

Pop artist Ron English, an occasional contributor to Lost At E Minor, sent through some photos from his latest pop-up show, which featured a brilliantly eclectic blend of his social critique artwork. Read more
