Who is beauty?
The expert compilers of European record label Wagram in collaboration with the editors of Elle magazine have selected the cream of female voices from around the world in this superb compilation called Voices Of Beauty. It really is kinda special, a femme fatale led foray into the world of roots, indie and dreamy pop music from some of the champions of the underground scene alongside a handful of larger known players. Featured artists include Canadian folkster Feist, French bossa/post punk outfit Nouvelle Vague, ex-Portishead vocalist, Beth Gibbons, Americana/blues sweetheart Norah Jones, Brazilian legend Bebel Gilberto amongst many others. It’s subtle and calming, a treat for discerning lovers of music with soul and thanks to Creative Vibes we have eight copies of the album to give away to random emailers with their address and the name of the favourite female vocalist in the body of the message.

There’s something magic about being in the same space as those performing at the very height of their field. The Australian Chamber Orchestra have just kicked off their Great Romantics national tour and it was a treat to see them live in Newcastle, Australia for their first show. I’m no chamber orchestra aficionado, but I know good music when I hear it. And the tones played by lead violinist Richard Tognetti are as sweet as you could hope to hear. Can’t hurt having a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù violin under the chin. A tour worth checking out.

Old-school, timeless French is the vibe of creative agency Mother London’s latest campaign for Stella Artois. Titled Recyclage de Luxe, these massive, 1960s vintage-esc posters lining the walls of London’s tube aim to unabashedly promote Stella’s green credentials. A survey of two thousand Britons has revealed the country’s perfect pet. Max is a bizarre hybrid that is part cat, part dog, part rabbit and part horse. Insurance firm More Than, which conducted the research, suggests that Max ‘has high energy levels, loves daily walks and sleeps for an average of nine hours 27 minutes a day’. Read more
Artist David Shrigley’s animated music video for Blur is so simple, so sweet, so perfect. I don’t know how many times I’ve watched it, yet it still makes me cry every time.
Last week when the 2008 ARIA nominations were released, I was so happy to see the recognition of Melbourne’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Their album Primary Colours is pure, unadulterated Aussie rock, standing out from the numerous electro releases we’ve had this year. The band manages to capture that wonderful pub-vibe without any pretension or tragic nostalgia. Primary Colours speaks to people who still seek an existence that is all about wearing ripped jeans, loitering and punching people in the face … not in a violent way, but because your fist flailed in that direction while you were thrashing around front of stage.
