Mia Mala McDonald is a Melbourne-based photographer who has a solid portfolio of live music-related work, but is also moving towards thematic photo essays, which capture people in moments of genuine expression. She believes the secret to taking a good photo lies in ‘patience, spontaneity and taking a hell of a lot of photos. Although I do shoot both digital and film, I much prefer film as it makes a much better picture than digital, film offers endless possibilities and control. I love the nervous anticipation I get every time I pick up my film from the lab’.

Crimea X is the coming together of two offbeat, disparate characters, DJ Rocca (Ajello, Super Sonic Lovers, Maffia Sound System) and Jukka Reverberi from 90s Italian glam cult rockers, Giardini di Mirò, who have often have been compared with the sound of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Godspeed You! The uber-hip French producer M83 has compiled a Secret Playlist for us in which he props Brian Eno, Julee Cruise, and Tears For Fears’ Head Over Heels: ‘This song was the biggest influence for my new album. How many times can we play the same song in different settings? Hmmm, I don’t know. But it is a hell of a song, from a hell of a band, as that uniquely English oddity, Jules Holland would no doubt concur.
Though most people in the West think of mahjong as a mysterious game old Chinese people play, it’s actually gets quite rowdy when people get together to play it. Rowdy is certainly a good adjective for Mahjongg, the exquisitely danceable electro-whatever outfit from Chicago who draw as much from Afrobeat as they do vocoder-laden sleaze rock from the 70s.
