Time is honey
I have a dream. Admittedly not one quite as profound as that of Martin Luther King, but a recurring dream all the same. In it I am walking through a vast expanse of forest – birds chirping innocenty as a gentle breeze blows my hair back alluringly like a still from a Wella Balsam commercial. It’s tranquil and breathtakingly beautiful and I walk, no, skip, down a well-trodden path scattering tiny pieces of bread randomly behind me as a reminder of where I’ve been. Suddenly my sense of serenity is disturbed by a slight rustle in the bushes beside. Inquisitive, I bend down – loosening my grip for a moment on the right hand of my companion, Keira Knightley (hey, it’s my dream) – and without warning a posse of rather pissed off squirrels leap out of the darkness and set upon me with rare ferocity. They seem convinced that I’m secretly hoarding nuts in my pockets. Their leader tells me so in a voice not unlike Kevin Arnold. ‘I’m not!’ I yell. ‘They just naturally bulge like that’. But then I reach for my jacket pocket and my hand falls upon some familar lumpy objects. Walnuts! And not just one of them, but a thousand of the damn things. It’s like that scene in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe with the endless supply of Turkish Delight. Only now it’s walnuts and a team of insatiable squirrels are frantically ransacking my pockets in search of them. At which point I usually wake up, heart racing and chewing on a rubber chicken. Man, I gotta stop eating cheese before I go to bed. [artwork by Liz McKay]

Filmmaker creates LEGO stop motion to propose to girlfriend
Now, this is one for the ages: back in 2010, Atlanta film-maker Walter Thompson created a jaw-dropping LEGO stop motion to propose to Nealey Dozier, his girlfriend of four years. The video took 22 hours of shooting and some 2,600 pictures to splice together, a small sacrifice to pay for years of happiness together. Right? Right! Oh, and she said yes. Bonus.

Says Van She bassist and vocalist Matt Van Schie about the Bush Tetras track — Too Many Creeps — from 1982: ‘I LOOOVE this tune. It opens with a perfect snare roll, and then the counter bass and guitar rhythms make it so cool. The lyrics are even more valid today. They’re one of my favourite bands of all time, and so many people try to do what they did for real. What a time! I wish I was born back then in New York, hanging out with these kids. Ahhhh!!’
There’s something quite captivating about the muted tones and soft textures of Anna Fraser’s photographs. The Australian designer has a very precise sense of framing, which is reflected in the slightly insidery, but beautifully balanced perspective that her work provides on places and scenery that only few people ever get to experience. By her own admission, Fraser ‘prefers things that are not usually very fashionable. Like beige, lots of beige and maybe a bit of taupe’. We think she might be onto something. Read more
Downtownfrombehind is a photo blog featuring creative types (artists, models, chefs, musicians) riding their bikes around downtown New York City. The goal is to highlight those who make downtown New York what it is today.
Last weekend I went to the Golden West in Baltimore to check out the What Cheer? Brigade, a marching band from Providence. I wasn’t expecting much, but when they opened with a cover of Slayer’s Raining Blood, my knees buckled. I think I could hear a musak version of that riff, and I’d still bang my head. The rest of the band’s set was just as riotous, with people dancing so hard, you’d think we were at Mardi Gras. I haven’t had that much fun at a show in ages.
